Pimp My Reid (season two)

Postby jacob_T » Thu Aug 22, 2013 5:18 pm

Somewhat inspired by the gentleman who whacked an Ultegra groupset on an entry level Reid frame, I decided to try give my Reid Falco a makeover.

This Reid was my first "proper" road bike. However, I caught a severe case of upgradeitis a while back, and she was retired, indefinitely.

Anyway, my wise friend Dan once told me: "You can't polish a turd... But you can roll it in glitter"

And with that in mind, I present to you:

very nice. Any details how you went about doing it? I wouldn't mind giving it a go myself.

It was ridiculously easy (assuming you know how to pull a bike apart and put it back together).

I stripped everything off the bike.
Gave it a good clean with baby wipes.

Scuffed up the clear coat with 400 grit sandpaper followed by 1200 grit.

Made sure the threaded parts of the frame were taped over/filled with paper towel.

Sprayed with dulux flat black paint from a can.

Let it dry and then built it up again.

All up probably cost 25 bucks. Had most of the stuff I needed for the build lying around. Just bought the sandpaper and paint and some new cable inners.

Special mention to Dan whom I stole the idea off. Although, his version involves a caad7 and is therefore, far cooler.

Nice... kinda.
Ditch the bartape for a nice red wrap and... 8)

The matt black is quite trendy. Good tip Mulger Bill, red is often a nice touch - but lime green is also striking and will look good.

Aha. I had white tape lying around, so that's what I went with ;)
But, yeah. I think a darker red would be nice.
Would you rock a red saddle too, mulger?

Looks good, bar-tape and seat combo matches well, no need to change.
Red wouldn't look right - but each to their own.

I've got a leather fetish so it's black black black for saddles (mostly). My Brit Racing Green Cooper FG bike runs a dark brown Swallow and matching leather tape and looks the part but that's how she came out of the box.

If I was to go the matt black rattlecan route, methinks a red unit would be awesome, maybe a few little red ano bits scattered about too. Just not too much.

Bartape must match saddle. It's in The Rules ;)

Nice work. That turd looks ... tasty
