Selecting a BB for replacement

Postby nezumi » Fri Aug 30, 2013 1:11 pm

My old Apollo LSX 1.3 is in need of some love.

I have realised that the cassette, chain and BB all need replacing. Chain and cassette I have figured out fine, but the BB is giving me grief.

The bike was purchased around 2000-2002.

How do I know what type of BB I can use. More to the point, what's the cheapest option from CRC that will do the job? (They are far and away cheapest for the cassette/chain.)

What BB do you have currently? I would guess a square taper cartridge type? Have a look through this and identify which type you have.

If you remove the BB, it should have the sizings written on it. If not, or you haven't remove it then you will have to;

    measure the spindle length, you may have to remove the cranks to do this accurately.
    Then you need the width of the BB required. To do this, measure the width of the shell on the frame which you insert the BB into.

Once you ID the BB and then get those two measurements, you can select your required BB. I ended up sourcing a replacement cartridge BB from Amazon for cheaper than I could anywhere else.
