When they need it ... simply you should be running your hands over your tyre's before every ride for debris and also pressure. Simple as that.

Thanks everybody for the responses. It helps to confirm that I'm not crazy and that in fact deflation is part of the normal operation. I tend to pump the tyres up at least once a week and that is generally after I give it the squeeze test and think "Yep, it's time again"

I have never once found myself pumping up my tyres, I usually have to do it myself.

I've never had to pump up my chain. Fortunately because that needs a really high pressure pump and I've only got a high pressure pump for my shocks.
