How to remove/replace decals on Zipp wheels?

Postby Ross » Sat Jan 18, 2014 5:26 pm

I'd like to remove the decals from my ZIpp wheels and replace them with the later 'Beyond Black' version, how do I do this?

With a lot of patience!

Basically just start at a corner, use a very sharp blade to carefully pick it up & peel away. If you try to rush, they'll tear and you'll have to pick off lots of tiny bits. Go gently & they should come off more intact, therefore easily. Clean any sticky residue off with eucalyptus oil.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

They are no more than normal vinyl stickers.
Just peel off with finger nail. Clean with acetone or Brake cleaner and stick the new ones on.

I remember Zipp had a DIY YouTube link on there website to do this.

Eucalyptus oil may leave a residue. Acetone's always a safe bet with carbon.

Get a hair drier and warm the vinyl up and they will peel straight off without tearing (not talking about blistering heat here).

Used this method many times over the years to get vinyl off plastic and metal surfaces. Turns 40 mins of picking and tearing into 5 minutes of heat and peel.

Carefully use a hair dryer and its easy... Too much heat will warp carbon rims however...

Clean with alcohol...

Then apply decals with wet method... Ie spray bottle with a small amount of dish washing liquid in it... Spray rim til wet...apply decal... Move to desired place on rim... Push any bubbles out... Leave to dry...
