How many km before first service ?

I bought a cell omeo at Christmas. Cell give a free safety check in the first month (we're I presume they just make sure nothing has or will fall off the bike or is broken, as it is a "while you wait" thing.

They also give 1/2 price for the first service. I have done around 1000 km on the bike and was wondering if has too early for a service ( I will be in Sydney for a couple of days next week so it would be convenient.

First service is normally a routine check over everything, tighten up all the cables (they stretch out in the first few hundred kms), check the brake pad alignment and gear operation, and probably check and true the wheels. Nothing too major. They will probably require a half-day to schedule it in the workshop, so don't plan to wait around. 1000kms is OK for the service to be done I'd say as it's mainly for cable tightening and early use checks

Free first services are usually good value for a shop. Apart from building rapport and loyalty, it is amazing how much customers find they need to buy, when they are standing around surrounded by bike bling.

Cell are really not a LBS (well certainly not my local as they are in Sydney/Melbourne and I am in Newcastle)

My understanding is that they are in somewhat of a transition from being mainly an internet retailer of components/accessories/clothing etc to building and selling their own bikes as well. Over the years I have bought quite a bit from them, and their prices and delivery are excellent. (I also do buy some stuff from my LBS, but when their price for tyres, tubes, CO2 etc is more than double Cell's price I draw the line)

My previous bike was from my LBS, and while the service has usually been good, they just could not compete on price when I was looking to upgrade. On my original purchase they did give free yearly servicing (parts extra), they no longer do so, offering only one free service on a new bike.

I have to say I am loving my Omeo 2 (now nicknamed "Black Betty") and have had no issues with it (doesnt seem to have improved my Strava times much though )

Most cycle computers have a service interval indicator at every 750km,s,my new bike which I also got in Dec is almost doing 1000km,s so I will book it in next week for its first service from the bike shop I got it The deal I got was one year free services,also if you have a free service don't book it in as a free service as they seem to spend less time on the free ones,just tell them its a free service when you pick it up, a mate who works in a bike shop told me this

All this discussion about bike services . I don't reckon I've put a bike in for a service for about 20 years now . Even the 'free' first service.... I've usually not bothered as I can look after all that myself. Bikes today require far less in the way of servicing, with sealed BB and sealed wheel-bearings, headset bearings and more. I guess if the bike is a fancy carbon jobby it'd need more specialised treatment with torque settings required for every bidon bolt and cable anchor. But my (mostly steel) bikes get all the love and attention they need from me and my tool-set.

I'm less and less a bike-shop guy now anyway, with the last three bikes having been built up completely myself from parts sourced locally and more substantially from overseas. I'm not good news for the LBS, sadly.

If there is nothing wrong with the bike then it's hardly worth a service, a free safety check yes, but a service no. If you can lube the chain yourself then that is about all a service will do for a bike in good running order.

I'm a DIY servicer from a long time ago and if you are handy with tools, YouTube and the sheldon brown or park tools websites then you'll be able to save yourself the cost of a service in no time and be a let o keep your bike running efficiently in between services immediately that something goes wrong, which on a well adjusted and ridden bike isn't that often anyway.

+ 1 to both posts above. scheduled services are a scam. you should maintain your bike on an ongoing basis - regular checks and adjustments as they are needed. you will go broke and hardly see your bike if you send it to the LBS for each of these - learn to do them yourself. every week i'm adjusting or replacing something on my bikes.

Yeah I'm not so sure. All the bike shops would go broke I reckon because thats their bread and butter (servicing) since the online shops have taken away their parts business. I'm happy to support the lbs's and give them my bikes to service. Even go them to do fit my new tyres this time around (was free with my service) so I'm kind if getting slacker and slacker lately.

It also depends on the conditions you have ridden in the last 1000kms, I agree with all the comments about self servicing and there loads of people on here willing to give advice.

My OLD LBS in Melbourne CBD offered free servicing but due to the amount kms i was doing they got sick of seeing me every 6 weeks so started charging me.

I found that fair enough so I learnt to service my bike myself, which means I serviced alot more than LBS scheduled services.

I find the trick is to spend time setting up the bike up how you like, then weekly maintenance to maintain.

Bit like checking your oil level and coolant level in your smokebox every time you go to the servo.

I'm a fussy bugger and if I don't like how my bike's working/sounding/feeling, I give it a once over. In the colder months it's usually fortnightly, but over summer it's been monthly...

I agree with the above that servicing is a con. Bikes are such a simple machine and for the things that aren't intuitive, there's always Sheldon.
