I have a new bike with black brake pads. Took it out for the first time yesterday and noticed the black smear marks that they leave on the alloys. Just wondering if there is a type that can purchased that leaves no marks? Am I being too anal?
Thanks

brake pads - do they all leave marks on the alloys?Hi all,
I have a new bike with black brake pads. Took it out for the first time yesterday and noticed the black smear marks that they leave on the alloys. Just wondering if there is a type that can purchased that leaves no marks? Am I being too anal? Thanks
It comes down to the quality of the pads and how and where you use them. Mavic has these Brake Surface Stones and may be of assistance. But I am sure there are far cheaper ways to clean the the gunk off.

I second that. My old stock pads left heaps of crud on the wheels and you could also see it on the frame/fork. Swapped to Koolstop Salmons and no problems.
Prepswabs from the chemist or an obliging Nurse GLW clean the rim nicely.
Second the Salmons tho' Shaun ...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Hot water and detergent seems to work okay. My Deore OEM pads are shockers for leaving black marks. Andrew
Ditch the Deores Andrew, get yourself some Kool Stop thinline pads. If you aren't immediately happier with the improved braking and cleaner rims I'll buy 'em off you for the lads scoot. I am wearing them out fast so will follow that path before replacing them with Kool Stops. Andrew
LBS, eBay, Online. Try a web search or go to http://www.biketiresdirect.com/default.asp as one option. Regards Andrew
