Just got me a mag trainer and had a second go at it last night. After a 25min session my rear tyre was shredded to bits, I mean totalled!! This is a 2000km old Pro 2 Race tyre and had plenty of life still in it
What is the cause of this? Too much pressure from the roller? Tyre pressures too low? Other?
I've swapped out front and rear tyre and will test your suggestions tonight. I do not want to shred my brand need Pro 3 Race tyres that I have been forced to use
It will be a pain in the arse, but you will need to buy a dedicated trainer tyre, something that is a harder compound and get used to swapping the tyre over or even get a spare wheel. It's pretty much the heat generated by it all that will do the eating. The prorace (which I also have on mine) are a stickier (therefore) softer compound and a trainer will gobble them up a whole lot of nasty. I got my first trainer two nights ago, 2nd hand, but decided on a rim drive jobbie so I didnt need to change tryes/wheels.
You could maybe button off the pressure 1/4 of a turn and see how that goes, but then be careful of the tyre spinning.
Trainers are hard on tyres, but this sounds severe to me. I run 90-100psi on the trainer and adjust the wheel so it is only just enough to stop it slipping. I have old tyres and a dedicated old bike I bought for $60, but am still using the first tyre, which was already worn out.
I'm sure this situation will improved with a little attention the the set up.
It's the heat that kills. Up the tyre air pressure and reduce contact force would help. Trainer specific tyre works but would ideally have a spare wheel for the job.

i went for a different wheel with an old conti race tyre on it. tyre is still fine after about 1000kms (well, as good as it was when it went on!!).
Personally, I don't like the pro race tyres. Mr Moo had them on his ocr and they didn't last at all (about 1500kms). I've had better luck with Conti's.
Anyhoo...pick up another tyre and it will save you. Of course, you could dedicate yourself to changing tyre on Monday, riding the trainer all week, then switching for weekend rides. It works, but will annoy.
Third time lucky! I put on together a set of old crappy tyres, cassette and rear wheel an it works fine ie no shredding.
Check the photo its pretty severe shredding! Last night I used the front pro2race tyre with not too much pressure from the roller and the tyre started melting on the roller!
Thats strange, I use pro2 race tyres and have no problem. Done about 12 hours on the trainer in the last 2 weeks with a tyre thats got 4000kms on it (just swapped it to the rear from the front) and its been fine. Done some hard riding on it also in those hours including spinervals dvds where I gave it everything.
Have you checked the roller part where it makes contact with the tyre to make sure theres not something wrong with that? Its all I can think of.
