Hi ,
recently I was commuting to work and my chain seemed to come off while changing on to the large cog. I pedalled on hoping the chain would self sort.
No luck, gears stuck and I could hear mashing.Yep my derailleur had ripped off completely hanging by the gear cable.
Repairing the damage I noticed the metal re-enforcement (?name )screwed into the drop out had also come out. I have screwed it back in .
My concern is that it seems like a pathetically weak point ,that my derailleur hanger attaches too.
Theres no break or damage to the frame thats visible .Lucky I guess ,I am tempted to apply some bonding glue to the plate to help support these two tiny screws.I guess it may be designed weak point to break to protect the frame .
Otherwise I have repaired it and out riding again.
Another plus for metal frames .Not played with this bit before. Has anyone had any experience with it ? My question is do I leave it alone ?

Exactly. Nearly all frames these days have this type of replaceable hanger. It's designed as a sacrificial link to reduce the chance of more expensive damage to the derailleur itself or worse, the frame in the event of a crashBoardRider wrote:Hi ,

I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Definitely do not glue it in place!

I'd be searching for a new hanger ASAP too, possible that the existing unit has taken a beating from the previous nastiness.
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Great advice , hadn't thought about the hanger. I will change it as well .Do I change the drop out metal drop bracket as well ?.
Amazing how quick and easy my gears are changing now with the new derailleur.
I have just clicked over 6500km . I have needed to replace the chain and wheel bearings(rusted locking up), brake cables. Now the derailleur, I might as well change the gear cables/housing before I have no choice, may be after winter.
