Ultegra 6700 10spd to 11spd?

Postby harmonix1234 » Tue Aug 12, 2014 3:40 pm

Can I convert an ultegra 6700 hub from 10spd to 11spd simply by changing the freehub?

I want to buy an 11spd grouppo but dont want to have to buy new wheels as well.

I know I can just lace a new hub which is 11spd into back wheel but to be honest, I don't want to have to rebuild the wheel if it can be avoided.

No. The 6800 hub is fully redesigned from the older hubs, so there's no interchangeability.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

That is a good deal by the sounds. Do you machine them down to fit the wider 11 sp cassette?

Thanks Dale, when I get my 11 speed grouppo I'll keep that offer in mind. May take you up on it.
Cheers.

Dale, can you advise if an 11 speed cassette on your modified free hub, will have the sprockets in the same location in relation to the derailleur, as a cassette on a standard 11 speed free hub. In other words can one interchange a wheel that has your modified 10 speed free hub and modified 11 speed cassette, with a standard 11 speed wheel with standard 11 speed cassette, without adjusting the derailleur?

An issue I see with this solution, would be that one can not change the cassette without first having it modified.

For my 'Dura Ace 7850-C50' rear wheel, the only other option appears to be to replace the hub with a 'Dura Ace 9000-C24' hub, which has the same number of spokes (20 each side). Having never laced a wheel though, and the cost of the wheel hub, and the cost of the 11 speed free hub, makes this a dubious option. Hmmmm...

I'm keen on this process for my DA C24 hub. I've looked over this discussion, but not particularly impressed with the machine work to the hub.

dale79, is there any chance we could see some "naked" pics of hub assembly?

Hi dale79, I'm new to this forum and am based just outside of Sydney. Do you still modify 11 speed shimano cassettes to fit on 10 speed free hubs? If so can I please send you a cassette and money for modification?
Cheers,
Steve

I successfully used the method linked to below to convert my Durace C50 10 speed hub to 11 speed a few years ago (maybe 2014). Has been perfect and still in use today (literally). This method doesn't require any modification to the cassette so makes for easy replacement.

I purchased a Dremel to modify the hub (slowly and carefully), and a local engineer to lathe the freehub ($30).

I've used a file and it worked fine. Had an old wheel for a trainer bike so figured it was worth a try. No hiccups in a 1000k's so far. Cassete hasn't been touched.
