After my last XC event I took the rear rim to be trued, 2 spokes replaced and have a new freewheel hub fitted.
That was 5 weeks ago and still no freewheel hub and the bike shop said they had to order the original Specialized hub and that's the hold up.
Where's the part coming from China and on a slow boat how is this even possible when the bike is only 4 years old.

The boats have been stopped coming from Indo.........

Not uncommon - a bloke local to me is still waiting on a replacement for his Roval road hub which failed around 18 months ago now. As many would know, Roval is a premium-priced wheelset, whether the quality is aligned with the pricing, I cannot say ........

I've also heard on the grapevine that Specialized is almost set to change its retail / spare parts / accessories model - interesting times ahead....

My Rule of thumb,
if you cant buy the spares on ebay/chainreaction wiggle. i dont buy it
i have Chris King /DT Swiss and Hope hubs,
all with spare parts, websites and video tutorials to help you rebuild your hubs, wheels, Forks etc
i wouldnt trust most australian wholesalers anymore, who are running on the minumum stock and back order model for parts ...
Dont Specialised used DT Swiss internals, cant you just buy DT Swiss parts to replace....

Same. Especially for a mtb where hubs take lots of abuse. The most I ever get upset about is the ridiculous pricing like $100 for freewheel body. But cost aside, at least I can get rolling within a few days.

Just stick with wheels from Shimano/Fulcrum/Campagnolo/DT/Mavic. They are reasonably durable and parts are easily and quickly sourced online.

i'm sure this body of online advisors, would be able to find u a replacement
hopefully you are not just replacing, because of scoring on the cassette body?
Nothing a file won't fix.... and if it is a sealed bearing, probably replaceable, by your local bearing shop...
If you are at the point of no return, and ready to cut and relace new hubs into rim, you have nothing to lose
a few pics of said hub would be helpful

We can try, but there are so many iterations out there. Without having it in your hand, it's tough.

It's highly likely that this hub is produced by Novatec or Powerway - both good enough quality. However most "big brands" then request slight modifications to the hub shell/freehub mechanism to ensure that you are locked into their own spare parts. Big S and T are guilty here.

Specialized Australia did a big staff downsize last year and it could be connected both with admin and management of the inventory (speculation) and simply whether it is in stock. Potentially you have shipping from their distibution hub in Asia and then from Specialized Australia to the shop.

You can query the shop whether they know or can find out why there is a delay and see if they can get a qualified answer when the hub will be delivered.

update - 7 weeks now and the bike shop called to say the rim is ready so they freighted it out. Opened the box and found they had'nt refitted the bearings, axle or the shewer, hadnt replaced the broken spokes or fitted a new band. Unbelievable had to laugh, freighted it back with again a detailed list of the things I wanted doing.

cheaper, for new wheel from c r c or wiggle, to your door, than deal with wholesalers and retailers in australia

I broke mine on my Fatboy and rang a shop 130kms away. They sent me a replacement and I had it within the week.

I just read the serial number to the shop and they ordered it.

I had my freehub break while on tour a few years ago. Dropped into a bike shop Sat afternoon, was told to come on tomorrow to get diagnosed, part ordered Monday when suppliers were open and arrived and fitted midday Tuesday. Same issue happened at the end of the trip, and I got it fixed at home(I've since retired the wheel) and after 2 weeks I had to call to find out that the part hadn't even arrived yet.

Mine just gets better, they through out the axle and other associated parts and had to reorder them but there also coming on the slow boat from China. Missing riding me MTB bike and have missed 3 XC comps, when the rim comes back I'm forever done with that bike shop.

i'd ask for a replacement loaner wheel, until, it arrives, if they have thrown parts away, they have gone beyond stupid...

Yeah, 15 weeks and now have the rim back. Previous freewheel hub was the original Specialized hub and the new hub I'm told is once again the original Specialized hub which had to come from where Specialized is manufactured.
All excited to be getting back in the dirt only to find the spokes touching on the back of the brake caliper and the disc brake isn't running freely.
Would it be possible that when they trued the rim its off centre and is set to far to the left.
I've had all I can take from this bike shop and on Saturday I'm taking a drive to Rockhampton for Giant Rockhampton to correct these issues and then they can freight the bike back to me.
I can't see why the problems, all I wanted was a new hub, 2 spokes replaced a slight buckle taken out and a new rust band fitted.

Buy a new bike.. F*ck that !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !!..

I haven't got the whole picture from the story so far. Why did you want two spokes replaced? If they were broken it wouldn't have resulted in a slight buckle to the wheel.

As for the current issues the brake rubbing could be a seperate issue to the spokes contacting the caliper. My first check would be whether the axle is indeed sitting properly in the dropouts because if it wasn't that could explain both symptoms. I would expect that there would be a reasonable margin between the spokes and caliper when everything is working properly otherwise you would expect that in the hands of some gorillas who ride that the bikes would be constantly destroying wheels, brakes and rear triangles. It would seem to me that if the rim was so far off centre such that the spokes are now touching, then the tyre is probably also making contact with the stays.

Otherwise...

Did they rebuild the wheel onto a new hub, or is it still the same hub with a new freehub or axle assembly? Any competent wheel builder ought to be able to build a wheel with the centre of the rim being directly in line with the mid point between the lock nuts. This is usually obvious with whether the midline of the tire lines up with the midline of the frame (seat tube, stay bridges etc). If the tyre is not square then an off-centre build can be confirmed by turning the wheel around and seeing if the wheel is now offset to the other side. (depending on clearance because the disc rotor may not fit on the 'wrong' side. If the rim is offset in the frame in both directions then it would seem that the frame is not square (or the wheel is not sitting properly in the dropouts.)

If the wheel is centred it is possible that the brake-side locknut is a different distance from the centre than the original. This can happen when installing a new axle if a spacer is accidentally placed on the wrong side of the hub. ( )

Which pad is the rotor rubbing on?

Hi Cameron, all fixed now and the problem was the rim was trued to far left and a washer of some kind was missing from the new hub.
Rebuilt on the same hub with a new freewheel.
