5600 front shifter broken?

Postby eeksll » Sun Sep 24, 2017 1:12 pm

Hello, is my front 5600 shifter gone beyond repair/fixable? Did some googling seemed to suggest it is likely gone beyond repair.

Had a long period where shifting from big to small chainring, the paddle wouldn't always engage, needed to push the paddle multiple times before it engaged/clicked.

Changed cable (it wasn't frayed anyway) still occurred, so yesterday attacked it with Inox spray, while i was spinning the cranks and spraying and trying to work the lever to get the oil to penetrate more places, I heard a louder than usual click/clunk when shifting.

now its stuck in the big chain ring position and the paddle never engages the click, it still springs back.

It's a known issue with the first two or three years' production 5600s, because they were designed to be used for both 2x and 3x shifting. If the 2x tuning isn't absolutely spot on, the shifter can begin to go into the third gear position and jam, eventually leading to failure of the shifter mechanism.

Short version: it's dead.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

For the benefit of others, the same issue also affected 4500 Tiagra and 3400 Sora levers; in all three cases the problematitic levers will have the base "xx00" product designation. They were all updated in 2009 for separate 2x & 3x shifters, although the 3x models are actually the original units renumbered as "xx03"; the 2x-specific models will have an "01" number.

so i finally got around to this today. put the 53/39 with only 39 chainring on the bike and thought I'd remove the cable as well.

I cut the inner and now there is a bit poking through, is there anyway to release the mechanism to the small ring so I can remove the cable properly?
