Shimano BR-R317 pad compatibility

Postby Zippy7 » Wed Dec 20, 2017 10:01 pm

I have Shimano BR-R317 disc brakes, and they came with G01S pads.
I have a couple of spare B01S pads, so I tried a pair in the brakes as they are very similar in size.

They fit, it seems to brake okay, but there is a slight rattle sometimes (presume there is a slight difference in the width)

Can anyone tell me if this would be a serious safety issue, or if its just a noise problem.
Don't want to have a big accident for the sake of a few dollars, but if its just putting up with some noise, then I will prefer to use the pads instead of losing the value.

Cheers.

There is apparently a minor difference in size, the B01S is not as wide and not as tall. Over a prolonged period of time the fore/aft movement (that's what you're hearing) especially under braking could damage or prematurely wear your caliper. The B01S will go into a caliper designed for a G01S but not the other way around, apparently.

Well, it doesn't rattle under braking, but was wondering if it was going to be a serious issue.
I think I'll swap the B01S to the back and keep the G01S in the front and just go harder at the back to wear them out (unless I find a pair of cheap Spyres or HRDs to swap out the 317's)

Pad will move back to front inside the caliper under braking, may hear a single clunk while it does this, and has the potential to damage the inside of the caliper.

As 10speed says, it's not worth the risk of potential damage to the caliper for the sake of a few dollars. Just use the right pads.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
