Convert down tube to sti

Postby Big daddy » Mon Jan 08, 2018 3:39 pm

Hi all
The friction stopper broke on my suntour gpx left side shifter
Parts are hard to come by

Thinking about converting to sti
Looking at Shimano Tourney on eBay
Any opinions please
Will need cable stoppers for down tube
Bike is 1990 cannondale black lightning
7 speed rear
2 speed front
I have been told get a modern bike
But only want a synapse and I can’t afford it for a long time
Thanks
Greg

Easy done, used my old 92 Apollo commuting for many years and replaced the downtube shifters with shimano tourney 7 speed rear 2 speed front- bought a double cable stop bracket on ebay from Adelaide if memory serves me right- still works fine today I use it on some club rides.

Thanks daus
The cannondale has bolts holding the down tube shifters in place which go into the down tube sorry my description isn’t the best

Downtube cable stops

Imagejust screw into the brazed mount for the shifters. They come in curved base and flat, and assuming you have an 80s-90s frame you will probably need curved. Just beware that Shimano sti shifters may or may not play nicely with the SunTour derailleurs (chances are they won't) and you may need to source a new pair of shifters.

Found these :

were they stem mounted?
were do you want to place the replacement shifters?

Some have a band clamped around down tube mine screwed in to down tube
As I am running suntour edge derailleurs
Would this work better than a shimano sti

They look pretty cool

Those are MTB shifters, and whilst they may work with the derailleurs (probably will actually), you won't get them onto your downtube. Clamp diameter all wrong as are meant for bar-mount. And then what to do with the brazed shifter mounts ? If you have Edge derailleurs, then the below shifters are what you need, and will work with the 7sp AccuShift indexing. Just be careful cabling them up, they're sensitive to how much cable housing loop is at the rear end.

or these will also do the job (and look ultra cool):

I did see a set of SuperbePro 7sp shifters in Sydney, but seller wants ridiculous money for very worn looking shifters so didn't link.

Sorry for all the different links, just found these :

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NOS-Suntour-Radius-Shifters-6-7-Speed-Index-or-5-6-7-Speed-Friction-Compatible/391803985703?hash=item5b39565f27:g:RCEAAOSwYHxWIwXb

which are a more cost-effective solution and should work with your 7sp in indexed mode.

The radius are a very nice shifter
The only reason I looked at the command levers was because they were suntours answer to shimano sti,s

As they bolt onto the side of the brake lever

Yep, bar mount, although I had the XC shifters in mind when you first mentioned them. I've never seen these in the flesh but reading up, they should work with your derailleurs.

And I feel your pain regarding finding SunTour parts. I've just had one of these sent over from Europe, couldn't find one here.

How long did it take before you found the super bee pro
There like gold or as dear as gold
The only reason I bought the cannondale was it had a suntour sl rear derailleur which I wanted for my old steel bike which had a sl front derailleur and down tube selectors
I decided to keep the cannondale I was amazed it was so light
Found an edge rear derailleur to match and decided to restore it slowly
It’s a healthy addiction

That one took 3 months of patiently searching and scouring forums and user groups as well as the dreaded fleabay.
As the years go by, and SunTour slowly fades from collective memory, it's becoming a slightly frustrating addiction. Still think they made the best derailleurs of their time.
