Part of thru axle broken

Postby Orion » Sat Jan 27, 2018 11:46 am

Part of my MTBs thru axle has broken as shown circled in the photo. It's a 2015 Trek Superfly FS8. I don't know what this piece is called but does anyone know if it's possible to buy just this part or would I have to buy the whole axle? I've looked around on the internet and can't find anything about it.

I think you are out of luck. Pity, through axles are not cheap.

That's the nylon shaped bush? Hmm... maybe talk to your local Trek or Fox dealer- they may have a broken axle in the parts bin they can give you to cannibalise.

Good idea, thanks. I'll check with them next time I'm passing by. It hasn't completely split yet but it's not far off.

I managed to track down a couple of sources online but they're overseas. They seemed a little pricey and shipping would only add to that. I'll see what the LBS has to say.

When I built my Lynskey the thru axles were hard to find locally, so when I did find them I bought two of each just in case.

Good idea. This one has lasted about 2.5 years but it would be a waste if I had to replace the whole thing for just one little part. But that's the way things are going with everything these days.

If you do have to replace the axle be sure to get an all metal one.

Yup. The plastic cam levers have a super annoying habit of breaking. Not fun when you're mid ride and you can't get your wheel out to change a tube.

Personally I prefer the lever-less syntace ones where you use an allen key. Haven't seen them for the front.

I know they mostly do thru-axles to attach your trailer adapter, but they do have a few possible solutions: https://robertaxleproject.com/

And they are a family business and very helpful.

Thanks everyone,
Looks like there could be some other options other than the standard axle. I'll pass by the lbs on Thursday or Friday and see what they have to say.

Yes, you are not restricted to the stock Trek axle, there are quite a few choices.
