garmin edge 1000 - broken power button

Postby borat » Tue Mar 27, 2018 9:28 pm

Has anyone ever had their power button crack and then completely collapse in? I have a gaping hole where the power button is supposed to be, and my just over 2-year old unit is now worthless. Anyone had it replaced/repaired or given a refurb unit from Garmin? Or am I wasting my time?

Mine's done exactly the same after 2 and a bit years years of admittedly heavy use. I turn it on by pressing the tiny button inside with the tip of my sunnies. Only problem I have really is that it's no longer waterproof so if I go out in the rain I fire up the Strava app on my phone instead. No good of course for seeing what I'm doing as i ride but at least it logs the distance.

I don't know whether or not if its just a case of luck, but I use a silicon band cover on the garmin. Never had a problem with the buttons (maybe 6 or 7 years so far )

I think Durianrider YouTube had a series of angry rants about this exact problem and their poor service.

In situations like this, I have often have success in contacting the company along the following lines:

"Hi, I have had your Expensive Electronic Device 2000 (serial no. 123456) for a couple of years. But in the last month it has repeatedly been giving electric shocks to random strangers riding past. I have tried unplugging it, doing a reset, and standing on one leg under a full moon as suggested in the manual but it continues to do this. I have logged hundreds of rides with it and have been very happy with it, except for this recent issue. I know it is now out of warranty, but I was really hoping not to have to replace it, and wondered whether you had any suggestions. I can provide a photo of the exposed electrodes if that would help."

Basically be polite, be a broadly happy customer, and ask for help rather than straight up demanding a replacement.

Garmin have generally a good reputation for customer service, and will probably come to the party. Certainly you have nothing to lose by at least trying.

This happened to my Garmin 500 a nd i was able to buy a replacement shell from China for $40. A bit of soldering to connect the beeper was all it took.

Happened with mine too - all in a very unreasonably short time, and the same solution worked - local garmin distributor stone-walled any efforts in that direction. Probably figures people won't have time to take him to consumer tribunals etc., Or maybe they've just got way too many customers blindly handing over their hard-earned dollars to worry about their reputation. But haven't got any of my dollars since, for either bike or general fitness watches.

I used liquid insulation tape for mine. Seems to work better than the original :-)
[edit: best used outside though, those volatile organic compounds are pretty nasty]
