Splicing Di2 SW-R610 Sprint Shifters into Di2 ST-R785RL Hydro Shifters?

Postby Crawf » Wed Apr 18, 2018 12:18 pm

In a nutshell the SW-R610 buttons cannot be plugged directly into the ST-R785RL (Hydro) shifters because they do not have a notched port.

Anyone know if you could just cut off the SW-R610 connector and splice it into the SD50 cable that runs from the SM-EW90 Junction to the ST-R785RL (Hydro) shifters?

Is the notch on the connector the issue ? Or is it something else (like the 'inlet' on the shifter is completely different ?)

Two problems. One is ridged plug/notched port, the second is that the R785 shifters do not have any extra ports to plug any satellite shifters into.

It is possible to splice cables, but you do need to be very handy at delicate soldering work, because the wires are very fine. The hard-wired "tails" on the sprint shifters are quite short, so you'll need to ensure your bridging cables are long enough to reach the junction box, which will need to be a 5-port version.

I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Yep, I know that.
My query is really whether you can splice it into an existing SD50 cable?
Is it a dumb button?
Or is there something in the shifter (a chip) that controls the SW-R610, I think there must be if it can be programmed?

Wondering if these two can be joined and plugged into my only spare port on the SM-EW90 5 port junction?

On a side note, I'd love to upgrade the bike to Di2 Hydro, but the costs still haven't come down on the 6870 setup - seems the cheapest I can get the internal battery kit for is 900 odd Euro :(

Oh well, other than that, I'm out as far as helping goes !

Yep, on top of the already exxy Di2, Hydro really does bump the price up even more.
It's so bloody good though, wouldn't buy a roadie without it now.
You still got the 'original' disc roadie?

Kinda. Wish I had seen that last week, I have that climbing shifter on my bike already.

Got my SW-R9150's today, so will be hacking them tonight.
Worst case is I buy another SM-JC41 to integrate the SW-R9150's together under the bars if it all go's pair shaped.
I'm an electrical/soldering novice so should be interesting :D

Crawf,

Sprint shifters are dumb buttons. They do not have the smarts to send messages on the DI2 bus. This is why they need to be plugged into a special port on shifters that can then see the push button press and generate the messages on the Di2 bus. I suspect if you splice them in, you will just be shorting out the 2 wire bus, and this may have negative effects (but probably not). You would effectively be shorting the battery which may possibly cause some damage, but they probably have protection to prevent damage.

I went down the WW path as linked to above.
Works a treat and cost $4 for micro switches all in!
So I have 2x sprint shifter buttons and 2x climbing shifter buttons all integrated into the one plug.
WIRING PIC

The SW-R9150's were untouched and needed on the wifes flatbar anyway.
