Installing crown race on tapered fork

Postby uad782 » Sat May 05, 2018 7:18 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to install a crown race on a tapered carbon steerer. I have not used any brute force. I am guessing the crown race needs to be positioned at the bottom.

If that is the case it appears the race is quite small. If I bash it down I am guessing I may damage the fork. The fork is an Axeman made for Lynskey.

Any advice appreciated.

The fork appears to have an integrated crown race.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Does that mean I don't need the aluminium ring as the crown race is carbon?

I'll have to say a 'maybe' it's required.

I recently purchased a F&F - a kinesis Racelight 4 Season disc with Tracer disc fork.

In the parts kit that came with it, there was a lower crown race (alloy bit like you have) and the somewhat crappy instructions indicated that it didn't need this fitted. The bearing sat on their fine without issue, so ahead I went (also sent an email to Kenisis themselves, and they replied, that NO, it didn't need it). All worked fine.

1st ride out the gate, and the steering seemed a bit stiff, but OK.

Turned out that there was the slightest of touching of the fork crown and lower head tube.

A bit more googlefuing, and I found that it did indeed need it !!! Took out the fork, and the got the race knocked on at the local shop and all good.

So, maybe it does need it, and only assembly (or good & correct instructions) will tell.

Thanks. It would need to go on a fair way and I don’t think it would fit easily. I I’ll contact Lynskey.

Just finished building my Lynskey up, Duck is right, it is already built in.

Oh, and on a unrelated topic..... Duck you were correct, Shimano's 160mm front brake adapter works for a 140mm disc on the rear (spoke to you in the real world one morning in the shop). :D

Lynskey Cooper CXs are a cracking bike!

Cool beans! Brain is still a bit fuzzy first thing, but once I'd woken up properly I knew they were the same. :-) (I'm not a morning person. :-P )
