9 speed mtb chain

Postby warthog1 » Mon May 14, 2018 9:30 pm

Has anyone got a non-shimano recommendation for a 9 speed mtb chain?
I put a 9 speed hg chain on today and it failed up a climb at the joining pin.
I installed it the same way I have dozens of 10 and 11 speed shimano road chains without issue.
It appears to have let go at the end where you snap off the excess pin.
Anyway, lost confidence in them for mtb now, so am after an alternative that uses a joining link (lower end if poss)

How about using a joining link in the existing chain?

Cheers,

Yeah I've fished the old one out of the bin and I'll use the joining link out of it (KMC).
I think I'll just grab a few kmc goers. They review ok online.

Have a look at Connex, German made. My partner just did 1000km on the Munda Biddi on her 9 speed and there was zero wear that I could detect by measuring a foot of chain. Not surprising as I think it was the 9sE, which is a Stainless E-bike chain! Wasn't cheap though... 29euros

Thanks Trev. I ordered a couple of kmc chains from wiggle for 17 each.

I've only used KMC chains now for a couple of years. Prefer the missing link and the pricing.
Campagnolo for show, SunTour for go

Only used ultegra and 105 chains on the roadie and sram a couple of times. I'll see how they go. Thanks.

Yeah, me too, but this Connex seems next level... I've got one on my MTB as well, that seems OK but I haven't been riding that much. I'm trying one on the tourer next, I had an SRAM single speed on there, but that actually stretched more than the 9 speed on Deb's bike. It'll be an 8 speed 808.... or if I can change my order, an 8sX

I've *never* had a 9-speed chain fail and I've been using XTR chains for ages. I still have 4 or 5 new in packets. They last really well, too. I've just put on my SS 29er.

I do however, use quick-links rather than those joining pins, as I remove and swap chains frequently, whenever the one on the bike needs cleaning.
