Broken zipp rear hub

Postby warthog1 » Mon Oct 15, 2018 9:26 pm

As per the thread title, the 20 spoke rear hub has broken the flange on the drive side.
It is radially laced on the drive side.
Any ideas on an alternative hub with which to get it rebuilt?
I will be getting a shop to do it.

It looks like this;

Aftermarket 20-hole rear hubs are exceptionally rare, but not totally non-existent. Hope make one, but whether you (or your chosen shop) can find one in the country is another matter.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

No. The DT website description is poor, not distinguishing the spoke count options for front or rear hubs. The 240 does NOT have a 20-hole rear option; 20 is only available for the front. That insanely-priced 180 is their only 20-hole rear model.

Pretty sure White Industries do a 20H rear. Really nice hubs to match those wheels as well.

http://www.whiteind.com/t11/

Not sure what else its reliant on but think I remember seeing Zipp wheels with rebuilt white industries hubs on ebay at some stage before.

An inexpensive option is the Novatec F482SB-SL. Although it will look like you have a Chinese made wheel with Zipp stickers. :D

Thanks fellas. Some options there. :)
I'm liking the price of that novatec hub Biker jk.

Chris King make a 29 hle hub, but its even more insanely-priced than the DT swiss 180.

White Industries T11 Rear Hub comes in 20 hole, but t won't be much cheaper

Bike 24 list the Hope RS4 hub for €162.60 + shipping, but neither black nor silver are in stock in 20 holes

I'm interested to know why it was laced that way. Radial lacing on the drive side and what appears to be 1x lacing on the non drive side. Everything I've read suggests that radial lacing is the weakest so why do that on the drive side of a rear hub? Having said that, I'm not really familiar with low spoke count wheels as I'm on the heavier side and all my wheels are 32 spoke 3x lacing. I'm simple in this regard. :)

Do you know why it broke? Perhaps Zipp will replace it under warranty or you can purchase a hub from Zipp.

Another perhaps smaller consideration is the space and size of the flanges, as you might be able to recycle those expensive spokes.

Also if your running 10 speed, then check if the new hub is compatible with 11 speed with a free body change to future proof
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

I'm not sure about warranty. NRS neutral service wheels from a few seasons back. Got them at well under half price and near new. That may preclude warranty.
84 reasons it broke, plenty of them around my waistline
A replacement one will likely break too.
It's 11s but I just won't ride it much I guess.
Most of the speed is in the front wheel and that'll have to do me if I go on those fast bunch rides I prob have no place being in anymore.
A significant form reversal will need to place first too.

I'm liking Biker's novatec option I think.

No you can't. Only way to get a Zipp replacement is to send (via your LBS) the wheel to SRAM DSD Australia in Melbourne or Echelon Sports (formerly Zipp Aus before SRAM bought out Zipp) in Brisbane and have the wheel rebuilt. Zipp hubs are not available, even to Zipp dealers.

Radial lacing helps with the lateral stiffness of the wheel, especially with low spoke counts. Low spoke counts also need fewer crosses in the lacing because there's naturally a greater angle off the hub due to the distance betwen each spoke. Also, slightly surprisingly, there's little difference in torsional rigidity between having the crossed lacing on drive side, off side or both sides.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Update: I took the wheel to my LBS, who sent it to Zipp in Melbourne for a new hub and spokes. The replacement hub is as found on their latest 302 wheels and is a new design (cross-spoke rather than straight pull).

The wheels are 5 years old but low km, and the warranty was only 2 years. So, while it wasn't covered under warranty, they did it a discounted price (still $500) so I have a suspicion they know those particular hubs are a bit shyte. The front was actually recalled a few years ago, and the hub was replaced. Apparently the old one had a tendency for catastrophic failure
