Track gearing ratio's for my age group

Postby Chaderotti » Sun Nov 08, 2009 3:46 pm

Anyone here have an idea what the track ratio's are for different age groups? I might start racing on the track and by that time I'd be 16. I had a shot on a track bike with the ratio for my current age group and it was far too easy.

A young fit bloke like you? An 84/11 would be about right.

Wow that's not really helpful.... 'roll out'. I thought the gear ratio would be more conventional.
6.5 metres. At 120 rpm my speed will be roughly 46.8 km/h. Gosh not fast enough

pedal faster!

everyone in your age group will be in the same boat so its not as if you're being disadvantaged

Since gearing is also affected by wheels/tyres choice, then roll out is used to ensure a real gear ratio limit applies.

A little basic maths can help you.
Gear rollout = wheel circumference in metres * chainring / cog
e.g. a 49x16 on 2096mm tyres = 6.419 metres.

But always a good idea to check it by doing a rollout.

I'm more of a low rpm sort of guy. Lay down the power but spinning fast is where I have problems.

When the time comes around to getting a track bike I'll have a chit chat to my LBS.
