Track gearing ratio's for my age groupAnyone here have an idea what the track ratio's are for different age groups? I might start racing on the track and by that time I'd be 16. I had a shot on a track bike with the ratio for my current age group and it was far too easy.

Re: Track gearing ratio's for my age groupA young fit bloke like you? An 84/11 would be about right.
Gravity will never let you down.
Re: Track gearing ratio's for my age groupWow that's not really helpful.... 'roll out'. I thought the gear ratio would be more conventional.
6.5 metres. At 120 rpm my speed will be roughly 46.8 km/h. Gosh not fast enough Princess

pedal faster! everyone in your age group will be in the same boat so its not as if you're being disadvantaged
Re: Track gearing ratio's for my age group
Since gearing is also affected by wheels/tyres choice, then roll out is used to ensure a real gear ratio limit applies. A little basic maths can help you. Gear rollout = wheel circumference in metres * chainring / cog e.g. a 49x16 on 2096mm tyres = 6.419 metres. But always a good idea to check it by doing a rollout.

I'm more of a low rpm sort of guy. Lay down the power but spinning fast is where I have problems.
When the time comes around to getting a track bike I'll have a chit chat to my LBS. Princess
