Is it still a ring spanner if its got a socket like thing on the end of it? I think they are like this so u don't damage the dropout which is recessed on most track bikes I've seen.

A ring spanner has a closed (ring shaped) end with a single or double hex inside.
A flat spanner (also called open ended spanner) has a U shaped end with opposing flat sides.
A combination spanner has a ring at one end and an open end at the other (both of same size).

Hmmm... a normal spanner, ring spanner or shifter wont do the job. I might have to wait till I get out to the track again and ask there.

A few wheel nuts are 17 mm across flats - the Apollo Salt and Pepper retro fixie/single speeds come inexplicably with these
