Do you want to try Track cycling?

Postby r2160 » Tue Apr 06, 2010 5:33 pm

Hi all

As part of Bankstown Council's Sport of the Month, Cycling is the April sport.

We have on April 7 and 21, between 6 and 7.30pm, you can come to the Dunc Gray Velodrome and try track cycling. There will be loan bikes available to have a go. The evenings are completely free.

Just bring your pedals (although there will be pedals available if you dont have any) and yourself and give it a go.

Cheers
Glenn

Get on it you lot :!:
As someone who rides a loaner on the Open nights(Fridays) at the velodrome here in Adelaide, I've gotta say this is an offer to good to refuse.
If you are even half curious, then go and give it a try.
Nothing can compare to spinning your legs off on a track with no obstacles, cars, dogs, potholes etc to worry about.Sheer exhiliration and freedom at top speed on a brakeless fixed gear. This will get your heart pumpin.

well we rocked up last night to the velodrome to give it a try. standing in the centre, it didnt look too steep, but as you got closer to the big banked ends, that 45deg slope seemed almost vertical. after getting sorted out with our bikes, we were off. the first lap was a case of "what the f#&k am I doing here, i'm too young to die". once i got the hang of things, it was full speed ahead, with overtaking whilst on the blue line ( which is reaaly high up) and some fast but exhausting laps.

i found my bike a bit undergeared with its 48/15 gearing, I was having to spin like mad to keep going. I think my road fixie has about a 46/15 from memory, and i certainly would have been more comfortable on the track with say a 51/15..

if you ever get the chance tp try it, its well worth it. the club hire bikes are excellent, and look brand new.
if you thought a tight bunch ride down west head road at >40km/h was fun, imagine doing it on a steep timber floor, with no brakes, and an awful lot of adrenalin.... after 3x10 minute sessions, my legs feel about the same as after a fairly quick 60km road ride...

oh, and did i mention the cheerleaders who were training there as we left......

thanks to the bankstown club guys for there help in running this. i was surprised that from baulkham hills it was only a 35min drive in peak hour. makes me think about doing more of this...

yep, definately a good night. Bit of a moment seeing that embankment up close for the first time, but then a rush when you get some speed up and start getting higher and higher on the bank. I can imagine the thrill of doing track cycling in group or team events!!

It only hurts after you stop sliding! Don't let that stop you from continuing the track experience. My most memorable times were on the track. :D

Sounds like you guys, except djansch had a good time. Shame about that, hope you will give it another go when the bod's repaired itself. Haven't seen the cheerleaders in a while.

What licensing is required for these free days?

there was no license required for this night, simply register. i think the "try it" nights were organised by or through
bankstown council as part of their "sport of the month" program. Yes, i do intend to head back to the track, but i will be
seeking some "guidance".

This is obviously very subjective, but I can imagine that people who have never ridden track (the audience of this thread) aren't likely to be checking the track section.

Some bike shops have hire track bikes that you can use for a weekend or longer. Wolves Bike Den at Caboolture do this in QLD. :)

Is there a regular, "try before you buy" schedule or was this a one off? Really keen to see what the track is like!

The reason for the try sessions was for people to try that dont have a licence. Unfortunately to ride in the velodrome, a licence is required for the insurance side.

If you have a cycling licence, just pop an email through Bankstown cyclings website and they can organise it for you.
