Didn't do well that day, but the next day, on my home track at Lidcombe, I managed to mess things up a bit for D grade. I can wind it up quite well and drive into the breeze, so my job was to get things happening and thin the field out a bit. Of course, no collusion happens in track cycling, so it was just a coincidence that I had my club mates on my wheel each time I jumped.

The photo in question, is one of the best Tour De France Finishes,
1969 - stage 18 - TDF- Mourenx – Bordeaux.
Always finished on the Bordeaux Track at that stage (Up until 1975).
It's Barry Hoban, winning his first of consecutive stages.
1.Barry Hoban: 5hr 44min 43sec
2.Harm Ottenbros s.t.
3.Pietro Guerra s.t.
4.Roland Berland s.t.
5.Francis Rigon s.t.
6.Guido Reybrouck (AT) 52sec
7.Dino Zandegu s.t.
8.Marinus Wagtmans s.t.
9.Gerben Karstens s.t.
10.Eric Leman s.t.
In 1969, he also married Tom Simpson's widow.
Cheers

On Merckx 1969 Tour de France. Merckx won by the largest margin in 17 years.
From 2. Roger Pingeon (AT) 17 minutes 54 seconds.
Same Tour...
Points Jersey:
1. Eddy Merckx: 244 points
2. Jan Janssen: 149 points
3. Marinus Wagtmans: 136 points
Climbers' jersey:
1. Eddy Merckx: 155 points
2. Roger Pingeon: 94 points
3. Joaquin Galera: 80 points
Clean Sweep... domination of the 1969 Tour de France was utter and complete

The recent innovation, of specialists, amuses me, even on the Track.
The times and results are barely much better, considering equipment/facilities.
All the Science/Meters/Methods may give a small gain, but at the end, hard work counts.
As you know, and over many era's, guys like Merckx and Coppi (The Real Greats)
and many others, rode Track. Merckx was good in 6-Day, Coppi enjoyed Pursuit.
A grounding in Track hones bike handling skills, speed, and race tactics including positioning
for Sprints. The business end of most Road Classics is the Finish.
As the end of a race approaches, be aware of attacks, guage the rider (you can't chase all)
and watch the next best sprinter to you (stay on or near their wheel). Within a kilo to go,
be up near the front. I would chase wheels, and as long as you are on one,
within 200m to go, and in the bunch (but not at the front) you can cut loose at 100m mark,
and most good sprinters would be untouchable at that stage (and don't overgear and tire)
That would be how to go about it, for me.
Merckx was one of the True Greats (unique) and any comparison to ANY rider today is ridiculous.
Cheers

The winners in Ghent from 1965 Eddy Merckx (left) and Patrick Sercu,
the first of their total 15 wins between 1965 - 1977.

I was told once that team mechanics could always tell which bike belonged to Malcolm Elliot, as the 14 tooth sprocket was shiny and anything with fewer teeth was completely unused - he always spun a smaller gear rather than trying to pound a larger one. Elliot knew a thing or two about sprinting and is still winning elite level events today in his mid 50'ssiennatrack wrote:.........most riders these days i watch in road sprints ride huge gears that they have no chance of getting on top of....

Caleb seems like a good new personality coming to Cycling.
Has been improving so rapidly, on the Track and the Road also, and it seems like,
at this age and stage, he is set to be a great rider.
Must be fun to watch his development there Mike.
Seems he has a well balanced development in Road and Track, which is what is needed.
Good position on a bike, looks comfortable in competition, and seems confident,
without being "trashy"
Kudos to Caleb Ewan, will follow with interest.

The guy in Blue with stars on his shoulders, half way down this page is my main contender in the 2013 NSW Masters championship. He is #2 in the world in 2012. Currently he's pretty much unbeatable, but there's always a plan...

Mark Gunter has a great collection of Cycling photos, sure your there, somewhere.
Sounds like, you have a target, so, true aim, with direction, can bring the desired result.
You just have to want it more, than the other guy.
No one is unbeatable, and with focus, hard work, your plan can be realised.
In competition, you must enter, with the belief you have already won.
That's how I understood it worked.
