This needs to be back on a track somewhere with bikes behind it. Are you planning on using it, or just showing it?david.w.kimber wrote:Image of restored pace bike mentioned above.

Glad to see Mike got you sorted on the photo.
That is such a nice restoration, congratulations.
Must keep the neighbors on their toes, when you fire that baby up.
Would say that's going to be a bit difficult wielding that around a modern velodrome.
(your going to need to find a big, old cement 'drome, for your tryouts, mate )
All the best with your project, will post anything else, relevant, that I find.
Cheers

You'll find a lot of stuff at the Finlay Brothers History Site
Google is also your friend.
Motor pacing with forks the right way around
The right way around, but also the wrong way, if you know what I mean (a bit big, how do I resize on this forum?)
More on Turtill's bike (Lot's of bike pron on that site)
It can be dangerous, though

Despite his successes, Merckx was not immune to injury and accident
as a derny race in Blois in 1969 illustrates.
Merckx was in a derny-paced exhibition race toward the end of the season.
These are races in which cyclists each follow their own motorcycle pacer around an oval track.
A pacer and cyclist fell in front of Merckx forcing Merckx and his pacer to fall.
Merckx’s pacer was killed instantly.
Merckx was knocked unconscious and was bleeding heavily from a head wound.
Merckx suffered a concussion and required stitches to close the gaping wound.
The worst lingering effect from the accident was that Merckx cracked one of his vertebrae
and twisted his pelvis.
This made climbing painful and, despite his amazing victory record,
may have limited his winning to some extent.
... having fallen, myself, from behind a pacer, my hand going into an opponents rear wheel,
and luckily, wrist turning tangent to the spoke travel. Lost a fair amount of skin and flesh.
Happened at a cement velodrome in Perth. Still have the trophy scars.

The Stayer bike as it is called, has a smaller front wheel, a steeper head angle, and reverse fork; all designed to get the rider closer to the motorcycle that is pacing him. There is a roller mounted behind the pace machine, set at a regulation distance. It is up to the rider to get as close to that roller as he can for maximum drafting effect.
If you look at the drawing on the left, you can visualize that a smaller wheel means less trail, a steeper head angle also means less trail, but the reverse fork increases trail to compensate. A stayer bike may have a little more trail than the average track bike, but not an excessive amount.
Another reason to have the fork reversed is that occasionally the rider will bump the roller on the back of the motorcycle. If he does the roller will spin and the fork will flex easier in the direction it is raked or bent, thus absorbing these slight bumps.

Track Sprints are less action these days, since the many rule changes.
Trackstanding, back in the day, was mostly psychological, though
some of the best I had seen, when it came to the banks, they
were masters, and would control the match on the bank.
Personally, like your father, it was not my "cup of tea" but since
I enjoyed the control, you had from the back (that sounds like Irish "Logic"?)
Many times you would be forced to get involved in a trackstand.
Here's a shot of Maspes, on the bank, as hard as it gets to master.
The steeper the bank, the harder to master.
It was just another discipline you had to practice for Track Match Sprints.
Ironic, standing still, there can be so much action.
Enjoy
Cheers

That was my dad's philosophy too ... ride the front. The Vigorelli bahn in brent's photo was a 400 metre outdoor (partly covered) wooden track. The rear position would be favoured with such a long straight. Hence the trackstand to force your rival to take the lead.siennatrack wrote:hi brentono i have missed these photos anyway showed my father this great shot and his response was that standing still was his pet hate and he always reckoned that if you lead out they had to be going faster to get past so put them on the hip and if you get beat you were just not quick enough simple irish logic,so please keep the photos coming we love to talk about them and sooner or later i will work out how to post some of my many cheers
These days most tracks are a standard 250 metre, and the front is the favoured position. You cant come over your opponent in the bend and the finish line comes up too quick for the rear guy to get by (generally speaking of course).
A friend in Germany sent me a Radsport story about how my uncle once beat German sprintmeister Bunzell a 3 up final of a sprint carnival in Berlin in 1950. Bunzell was undefeated and the race was on his home track. Only problem was, Bunzel chose the back position, my uncle took the front, and the track was 153m indoor.
These days the trackstand is a bit of a lost art /pointless activity, used mostly for crowd entertainment.

First heat Dew had to lead and was run down to be beaten by half a wheel.
Second heat Clarke had to lead and was soundly beaten.
Third heat Clarke had to lead. He rode rather than dawdled the first lap and wound it up to 25-30kmh in the finish straight, then just before the line he bent down and jammed his hand on the front wheel as a brake. Dew (who was a big man) had no hope of stopping in time and blew past into the lead. From there on it was a repeat of the first heat.
Cheers,
Cameron
