An amazing lot of information, in an era that was a generation or two before mine.Derny Driver wrote:
An extract from my soon to be published book:
All the best with the book, should do well, as the History of the Sixes, is really the
history of Cycling, as you point out, through that era, and even up to mine, all the
best Road and Track riders, were involved.
Giovanni Borghi may have been the person I met, at the INSEP/APSAP clubrooms.
Whomever, they were a well connected Italian, associated with the main French
Track Club.
Toto Gerardin, was a very strict Coach of the Team, which included Morelon,
Trentin and Quintyn along with some young blokes. Got to train with them
most days, along with other Champions who would drop in, if they were in Paris.
Great experiences, Daniel was a gentleman, and such a smooth sprinter I tried to
emulate. Guys like Trentin and Quintyn had the most jaw-dropping acceleration.
Toto was an item in Cycling in Paris, for sure.
In your research, you must have enjoyed meeting the Greats.

I've never ridden on that track but my understanding is the designers or builders screwed up somewhat and the transition out of the turn is a bit hairy at speed.utedeej wrote:Looks pretty much the same as that todayfoo on patrol wrote:Here's a pic of the banking on Canberra Velodrome back in about 1978 I think and it was, from memory, white washed concrete but definitely concrete.

It was like dropping off a gutter in a sprint up high.

That looks much like the Lake Monger Velodrome, also a designers or builders screw-up,
was so rough, and the sections were so uneven. Empire riders (1962) complained even when it was new.

What position is prefered?
Ah, yes, the art of the Track Stand, in match sprinting, as a rider that prefered the back,
it's something you have to train for. This one at the start, is often the case, and as you
rocked, your front wheel was not allowed to go back over the black line, from memory.
Too long (15mins) caused severe strain on the legs.
Some of the best artists I have seen, on concrete Tracks, like the above, would be mid-track
and on the rise into the bank, stop halfway up, causing the other rider, to balk, if they were
not prepared, and have to move through. Or both would be left balancing on the bank.
Thanks for the photo.

Check out the Quads on patto!!brentono wrote:Couple of Trackies, relaxing after the meet, with some fishing (early 50's)
I believe Patto preferred the front in a sprint match although he could win either way. Patto would have made a good keirin rider because he had a long sprint ...he could go 2 and a half laps easy.
My uncle rode a lot of sixes with Patto, he actually has permanent tendon damage in his shoulder from slinging the big fella.
My European friends still joke about his amazing sprint - pursuit dual world titles ... the guy was a freak. My uncle once saw him get overtaken in the back straight in a sprint by Fritz Pfenninger, kilo world record holder, who won 40 cars in six day race sprints in his career, and then Patto re-overtook Pfenninger on the bend to win by a wheel. Ive never seen or heard of that being done anywhere, ever.

Yer I was lucky to pick it up, plus a few others from an old cycling mate.
At the time i didn't realize Pijnen's name was on it.
I remember the 70's and 80's was a great period for Six Day events. To me, Pijnen was a stand out rider.
