Sussing out the Cycling Australia site now to get my licence and what a joke this is.
Need to be a member of a club then pay this or whatever. It's almost as difficult as getting a firearms licence. And what if you don't want to join a club? The only racing i will be doing is RAW.
Ill have a chat to a few of the guys next week and see what the story is.

I say join LACC, but you seem to have some hipster friends in DHBC, so you might want to go with them. You can join ANY club, including ones interstate, if you really want to.
Joining a club and getting a license is the same thing. There are no extra fees, it's part of the one payment. The license fee is there to support clubs, who organise the racing, cycling australia/nsw, who organise championships, and it also includes insurance.

Thanks for clearing that up David. I thought the CA licence fee was on top of club fee. I am not partial to any club, just looking for a good timebigfriendlyvegan wrote:Story is simple HLC. You have to be a member of a club to race. Get a six month license to see the rest of the year out. You can then race/train at RAW, Tempe, Lidcombe, Hurstville for track, and everywhere else for road.

The clubs around Sydney that have the bigger track involvement are;
St George, who train at Hurstville
Dulwich Hill, who train at Tempe (my club)
LACC, who train at Lidcome
Bankstown, who train at Bass Hill
Paramatta, who also have a velodrome but I know nothing about it
You can join any other club, Waratah's for example. And you can train at any other club's training session, for example at Tempe you will see riders from multiple clubs training together.
Each club has its pro's

Erskine Park - so western suburbs between Blacktown/Penrith. Will be moving to Parra area later this year. I have had a quick google, and Parra / Penrith are probably my closest options, but i'm not really fazed. Not really sure how much track training I will get in between my other commitments, so most of my riding between meets will be on the roadie or on the trainer.mikesbytes wrote:HLC where do you live?

If you're racing in a division (i.e. not novice), then you can get 4 rides. A warm up scratch race, a sprint event, an endurance event, and then a combined scratch race. You also get to see current and former world champs racing.Nikko127 wrote:So how many races do you get per night?

Last time I attended with young DD we got a grand total of 20 laps racing. I wouldnt call an 8 lap race "endurance". For people who live in Sydney, RAW is good. For me to make a 1hr 20" drive each way, I need more racing than that to make it worth the trip.bigfriendlyvegan wrote:If you're racing in a division (i.e. not novice), then you can get 4 rides. Crafty is a legend and RAW is a brilliant concept. Due to the huge number of riders attending and the time constraints of the velodrome, it is what it is - short races.
Im probably spoilt as I have access to our own velodrome and we canb go there any night and do 200 laps motorpaced or whatever we want. Our club holds track racing Friday nights too where our final event is usually 60-80 laps.
As I said, if you live close, RAW is great. I will probably come up in the next few weeks just to mingle and socialise. If Crafty could just get a Belgian beer bar in the track centre like they have in Gent .....

He was in Div 2 from memory Vander. Yeah I know, we picked probably the shortest race night of the whole season. Its cool. Its track racing, its utilising DGV which is great. Perfect for Sydneysiders. Young DD is doing his HSC but we might hit RAW again one night later in the season.vander wrote:DD what grade was your son in? The higher grades do a few more laps. Usually its about 15-20laps warm up scratch then a sprint as the second event which is only usually a few laps. Then an endurance event which again is usually around 15-20 laps. Last a combined which is of the same length. Its tough for them to run long races as there is so many grades it would just take too long, especially when he has to split grades. Most weeks there is (for me atleast) enough racing just check earlier in the week what will be racing and that will give you a rough idea how long they will be. It is also some of the best racing you will get in Syd.

What, endurance? 20k scratch or 20-50k Points Score race yeah but 15-20 laps. It was nothing unusual to finish at midnight, when I was racing.vander wrote:DD what grade was your son in? Pfft - old man stories. Next you'll be telling us that people used to race for days and tour stages used to be 300 or 400 kms.foo on patrol wrote:What, endurance? 20k scratch or 20-50k Points Score race yeah but 15-20 laps. You'll have to strip off all brake paraphernalia.Alien27 wrote:Im having a think about giving RAW a crack. I have a track bike I use as a fixie commuter. It's got 2 hoods and levers, one dummy and one for the front brake, I'm assuming you need to remove the brake but can i leave the hoods and levers on?
Depening on your setup - if it's threadless, just get a second set of bars to swap out when you remove the brake (means you can leave the cable attached)... or if it's threaded/quill, set yourself up a second bar/stem combo to swap out.

This is the best advice. There are rules about attachments on handlebars, so it's best not to have them. The benefit of a track bike is the easy swap out of the bar and stem.HLC wrote:You'll have to strip off all brake paraphernalia.Alien27 wrote:Im having a think about giving RAW a crack.
