Sienna, there's a grade for everyone, novices up. If you're doing 250k a week and you can ride a fixie, you can probably jump straight into Div 5 and get up to Div 4 pretty quickly. Of course, if you haven't done it for a while, have a go in Novice, where the distances between people are visible, and the competition isn't fierce.
You won't look like a goose at all. We have guys showing up who strain the seems of a 3XL, guys who show up in shy shorts, and we had a guy who forgot his kit and rode the night in a pair of skinny jeans a t-shirt (he has now been given the nickname "Levi" and assigned the race number 501).
Will you get ribbed occasionally? Yes (this is Australia). Will you get encouragement and advice from your fellow riders? Yes, lots of it. Will you have lots of fun? Yes. Will you see some really good racing? Yes.
Stop over thinking it and get on your bloody bike. This is probably the only sport in the world where first timers and world champions compete on the same field, straight after each other, and then share a sausage sanga afterwards.
