Pursuit frames

Hi all,

I'm considering spending a little bit of time at the track this year, focusing on what would be my best event(s): the pursuits.

I have a crappy frame that does not allow me to get into a very good aero position, hence my posting here.

For those who have done or know about them, what geometry makes a good pursuit frame? I've done a bit of research and my knowledge is limited. Taking some knowledge from my road TT rig, head tube length needs to be small and I would use similar stack and reach dimensions as my road TT setup, that being my top tube is smaller than the road bike.

I am willing to spend a little bit of cash on a frame but not a huge amount as its a developing interest, not an obsession (yet). Willing to take on board frame suggestions.

Hard question to answer as track frames are kind of general purpose built. Your best bet is to look at some low end frames and see how they compare measurement-wise to your road TT bike. Its really all about the fit. I have no knowledge of which brand frames are better suited for pursuiting. Guys ride all sorts of stuff. Like you say, the key is being able to get into a decent position without being limited by the frame. It shouldnt be that hard.
Even BT dont make a pursuit specific frame, the lady Im coaching just bought one, and the guys in Adelaide set her up on it (starting with measurements from her road TT bike) and she looks very comnfortable and aero on it. She also received front and back Mavic discs for Christmas off her boyfriend which will help her cause. I dont suppose you have a rich boyfriend SB, so you will need to sort this stuff out yourself.
I will keep my eye out for you.

BT, such a sweet frame. With mavics front and back too, how awesome is that setup!!! Hahaha, no rich boyfriends here, just a wife that wouldn't understand the purchase of such a setup so bargains are where I'm at. I don't care on age of equipment, just want to get something that will improve my position.

Yes, I'll be aiming to be there at the states champs, I'm currently getting the engine in the right condition whilst keeping an eye out for some better equipment. I'm keen to improve on that sub 4mins again, hopefully be in the mix this time round!

By the sounds of it, I can use the same/similar geometry for road and track TT, so at least if I get my hands on a new frame it won't take much to get adjusted for the races in February.

What size frame and how much do you want to spend, Strawburger? There was a BT frame for sale on Australian Track Market Place a couple of days ago, around $2400 I think.

You want a frame that has a good solid BB in it and a low stack height. My Azzurri Sprint frame is like that and also have a look at the CSD frames.

Thanks for the suggestions Foo. Looking at the stack and reach, around 51-52.5cm TT, depending on geometry.

This is another option if the geo fits. Basically cream of the crop as far as Chinese frames go. Lots of sprinters using them...... even Volikakis used one at the Rio Olympics. Many resellers badge these up as something different for a lot more.

The Azzuri frames are good. They're the revered Axeman frame from Thailand.

There seem to also be a number of older Stealth style frames on the market coming in under $2k or over $2k with bits

Ok, so I've sized up a few frames. The reach works out well, but the stack heights are huge for the intended purpose of pursuit riding.

I'm wondering how I can reduce the stack heights.

I've also seen that a few frames have similar reach, but their top tubes are 25mm longer than my TT bike. What gives?

Thanks for the links. I have a few pokers in the fire, but nothing solid. Waiting back on a felt t2, a Dolan df3 and a few open moulds as mentioned above and in Facebook.

Getting close on pulling the trigger. The felt has a massive stack compared to the Dolan. For my use, I am leaning toward a lower stack than a higher.

How probmatic is the stack height? I've tried everything to get mine lower and I've come to the conclusion that I need a new frame. I'm interested in knowing what solution you come to, frame wise

Personally I'd steer right away from the DF4. There's getting to be a lot of issues chatted about on the net. Particularly dropouts spreading and seatpost slippage that Dolan doesn't seem to want to know about or assist with.
