Yesterday afternoon saw me riding out of the basement parking straight into moderate but steady rain, which persisted for all of the way back home. As an added bonus, there was a gusty northerly headwind to keep me amused...
Looked at the BoM radar when I woke up to the ominous sound of rain pattering down on the roof this morning...and it didn't look good. Another rain front was just sweeping over Melbourne.
Fortunately by the time I left, most of the rain had passed and I just caught the tail end of the downpour. Unfortunately, the wind had turned, so another headwind for my commute into the CBD...

But... I got busted this morning not having hi-vis gear on through the depot. I know I probably should, but I'm using a vehicle and I reckon they wouldnt worry about a motorbike rider having hi-vis. Oh well, now I'll have to go around the corner and use another entry. I don't wear dark clothing, but it's not hi-vis either.

Apparently she has not had a puncture in 6 years, and this on flimsy 700x40c city tyres!
Anyway, found the glass in her tyre, patch the minuscule hole in the tube, gave her a quick lesson on changing a flat and sent her on her way, and suggested she head due to the local bike shop and sign up for their next maintenance course and to get a basic toolkit organised (or she could just look stranded and wait for a guy to help her!)

Chilly at 6C this morning, and even colder along the creek. Pretty good ride into the Melbs CBD nonetheless.

I arrived at my shower stop (generously provided by another business in town), and was then walking the last half km to my office when my phone rang.
It was the dentist's office saying that another patient had cancelled and could I come in early. Yes, I replied, I'm virtually at your front door, but I have my bicycle with me. No problem was the reply, and I was met at the front door and escorted to their staff lounge to store my bike for the duration of my appointment.
Then the receptionist held doors open for me to leave when I was finished.
So now I officially have a bike-friendly dentist!

I missed that ride to work Brekky, had to be at work early for a meeting.jasonc wrote:commute via the ride to work day brekky in Brisbane. nice morning for it
Much better commute than 2 days ago when i accidentally hit a big duck on the Coro bikeway. I got the fright of my life.
There was a cloud of feathers and the duck ran away to the riverbank.
I saw it on the way to work yesterday, it hissed at me furiously at me as i rode past as far away from it as i could.

those ducks need to have regos, bloody dangerous and unpredictable, flying wherever they like.elantra wrote: Much better commute than 2 days ago when i accidentally hit a big duck on the Coro bikeway. I got the fright of my life.

I had more layers than a strudel this morning. Base layer, SS jersey, arm warmers, Gabba jersey, 3/4 knicks, 20cm woollen socks, winter gloves, thermal cap. And I was still slightly cold. Once i got going it was good.
What a lovely crisp day. Everyone was well rugged up, even saw some balaclavas and neck warmers. Perfect sunny winter commute.

Ran over a snake (1.5m python) on sunday. Was head down grinding fast up a rise alongside traffic (Hepburn Avenue heading west from the freeway) and saw a stick ahead, all good, about 2m out it moved- no hope of stopping, turning (traffic alongside) slowing or bunny hopping at 45km/h- just ran straight over it with me emitting a high pitched squeal with images in my brain of snake flicking up and wrapping itself around me then biting me whilst it strangled me. Was a thump, I stopped and went back- snake slithered away looking perfectly fine. I went home and changed my lycra.elantra wrote:I missed that ride to work Brekky, had to be at work early for a meeting.jasonc wrote:commute via the ride to work day brekky in Brisbane. nice morning for it

Police pursued driver in a grey commodore comes out of side street onto my main road at a huge rate of knots without deceleration for the corner.
Somehow (and God knows how) all lanes of 2.5 lane road are momentarily deserted (this is peak hour in inner Melbourne, St Georges Rd for the locals) and driver loses control of car slewing sideways and collecting road furniture with rear of car and skidding to a halt.
Now stationary, side on to all lanes, driver seems stunned and remains stationary for several seconds until police car arrives with full sirens and lights a'blazing.
Driver of commodore suddenly "snaps to" and resumes where he left off with a sudden swing back towards police ... now driving against the traffic on the divided inner arterial.
Police pursuit is joined by another two cars (now three in total) and commodore takes the next right and disappears into the distance with full song police train in tow.
Wild scenes in Preston!

Was meant to be a cruisey ride home saving my legs, but when you spot a CCR opportunity up ahead what can you do? Caught up to the roadie in front, then passed him by showing off what MTBs can do and shortcutting a road crossing/chicane over the kerb. Then of course I had to keep the effort up for a bit to stay in front. He was just cruising. He caught up later after I backed off a bit again but stayed behind as he wasn't rushing and the sharepath was relatively busy. He stayed in the draft until I turned off. Followed buy a quick detour to the LBS to find out the parts I'd ordered hadn't arrived.

me - "radar is clear, I'm off"
Mrs JasonC "look again" as there's flashes of lightening outside
turns out the radar look had been on loop for a few hours and the storm was above us
went back to bed for an hour and a half then rode to work with wet roads

Normal ride home last night, put the power down and passed a few cyclists that may not have expected a lady in a skirt to pass them.
Chilly but otherwise a good ride in this morning. The rain started as I was almost at work so missed most of it.

Broke off a lug used for the rack mount on the right seat stay and couldn't think of a way to quickly field-repair it, so rode home with the right side of the rack knocking against the frame on the bumpier sections. Fortunately, there is a second set of lugs sitting slightly higher on the seat stay, so I remounted the rack and mudguard when I got home...all good again.
Cool start this morning, 9C with drizzle in places, but a good ride overall into the Melbourne CBD.

Surprisingly not that affected by yesterday's 76km Ride-to-Riverstone charity event and the 3km MS swim effort the day before, but now listening to the office chorus of coughs, sneezes, throat clearing and sniffles with some anxiety.

What music did you choose for (1) the strip tease & (2) the chase sceneLizzy wrote:Nearly wussed out this morning after waking up to the pit-pat of rain on the front porch, but decided to HTFU, put on all the gear, and give the new mudguards a system test. Of course, the rain cleared as I opened the front door so I was steaming in 5 minutes. Ditched the beanie in Osborne Park, thinking if I took the jacket off first it would rain again. By the bottom of George St I bit the bullet, stuffed the jacket into my rackbag, then got wind-chill from all the sweat (nice!) and put the beanie back on again. Couldn't get the temp right until I found some CCR action.
