The break seems to have thrown me out of my routine, ended up hitting the road (thankfully not literally) without my gloves and only noticed by the time I was well on my way.
There was a downed tree across the path on the Darebin Creek Trail, just after the Plenty Valley Rd bridge. A wall of green suddenly appeared in my lights, I hit the brakes, found a gap in the branches and foliage to lift the bike through and clambered over myself.
Good tailwind into the CBD, which I appreciated as the legs were a little lazy after the time off - even with tail-wind assist they were a little achy by the time I got in. Hopefully they'll settle back into the job after the next couple of rides.

798km for the month, and 2,498km for the year. Not all commuting, but all outdoors. I'm happy with that since I only really started riding again in July. I set a modest target of 3,000km for the year, but I'm thinking I have to revise that.

Yeah, I head North to get in to work, it was hard. Still, the way home was quick and easy. When I rode home, and I go home along the beach, the wind was strong but not gusty so quite good to ride in. Sounds horrendous out there at the moment, we'll see what the morning brings.Mulger bill wrote:WIND!!!! Blown in all directions except towards work

Also, I now have an additional magpie to contend with, making it four all up, depending on the route. They range from wing-slap to full contact types, so never a dull moment....
Did someone say 'wind'??? My ride into the CBD this morning was downright perilous. I opted to take the all on-road route in, as the Darebin Creek Trail would have been a challenge in the dark, with debris all over the place. Also, the radar looked pretty grim.
Heading down a wet Plenty Rd at about 45km/h, I was hit by a massive cross-wind - I swear both by wheels slid sidewards - scary!
Made it into the Melbournce CBD dry, which was pretty surprising.
Hope things calm down for the ride back this afternoon.

Couldn't clip in this morning, so rode the 1.5 kms to the physio with 1 leg, then caught the train halfway, bought a new set of cleats (>.<) and fixed the screw.
Made it in to work without hassle, just windy. As I entered the underground carpark, it started to rain.
I also need to get in earlier - someone keeps taking *my* spot in the bike cage(!)

Windy again this morning, but apart from the tree still down on the Darebin Creek Trail, the paths were surprisingly clear of debris. Legs felt a bit sore by the time I arrived in the Melbourne CBD - hard to believe a few days on the couch recovering from flu affect me like this.

Cutting back from the beach along Scarborough Beach Rd I had a close shave with a taxi who gave me about 0.5m distance when passing. He got stopped by the red light ahead so I rolled up for a chat without losing my cool. The driver was a ignorant Derryn Hinch reincarnate who called me a "nuisance" and to "get lost" after I tried discussing road rules.
All that being said I just purchased a mobius action cam to strap to the helmet.. to catch the traffic incidents of course.

Be careful there Jonno, it is school holidays, and those "beautiful women" may land you in hot water with the authoritiesJonno wrote:Loads of beautiful women out exercising this morning, and with Lycra being this seasons fashion, the heart rate was just a touch above normal.
I had some great fun yesterday with a photoshoot of the latest commuter bike added to the rotation thanks to the nice weather.
Last Friday also gave me some great fun captioning some miserable agro rider who was passed by an electric bike ahead of me, and I was just two too many for him to handle. The punch line seeing this image immediately after the incident blew me away
^ It must be the spot for exciting things on that stretch, it's where I spotted James Hird walking opposite direction when Essendon were last in town.

Beat my previous PB tonight. Average speed 34.4kph. Nice tail wind, with some lateral gusts.98octane wrote:Fastest ever ride home tonight. 34 kph average for 14km, from central Melbourne CBD, along MYT and Gardiners Creek Trail and a ~6% climb at the end. A mild NW tail wind was pushing a storm front through, which I luckily beat home. Only a little rain during the ride.

I was so preoccupied with thoughts of my quick ride and what I would do with the extra daylight that 300m from home I dropped the bike turning into a side street .

Been doing the same myself- very meditative to ride along the coast, Hepburn down to Oceanic Drive.Jonno wrote:I've been avoiding magpie zones and non-inspiring views along the PSP by taking the slightly longer route up the coast from Ocean Reef to Scarborough. I think this is my new standard route to/from work coupled with an occasional morning coffee stop at Yelo Cafe, Trigg. I'm loving spring!

How did you manage that, on shared paths not designed for high speeds?98octane wrote:Beat my previous PB tonight. Average speed 34.4kph.
