Congrats! And welcome back the commuting forum! Oh, and I don't really think that your posts are 'commuter whining' - they are more like pointed observations of the various tardery that is too commonly experienced on our chosen transport mode.

Welcome back Summer! 'Grats on the new position, boo about the parking.

When working in the city, a friend of mine used BikePark in Banana Alley. It's a nice setup if the location suits (and you can afford it). http://www.bikepark.com.au

Good to hear, Summer. The CBD's been lacking some DAA (Driver Attitude Adjustment) since you've been away  .

Nice afternoon in Melbs for the commute home, albeit busy on paths and roads - one can tell the schools are back...
Cool this morning, pleasant ride into the CBD.

Very easy commute this morning, having completed a 177 km local loop during the long weekend holiday yesterday. Weather is glorious and the gentle breeze was kind enough to be coming from astern during the run. And there were no other commuters in site which may have been too tempting to ignore for CCR action.

I had a bit of a laugh this morning riding through Five Dock. The bike route has been getting a bit tight due to a building site that is located on the corner of 2 rather narrow streets. Due to the proliferation of tradies needing to park their Ute's as close to the site as possible, the already narrow streets have become even narrower. To whit a delivery van attempting to thread the needle took out the wing mirror of one of the tradie utes and his own. He just kept on going without bothering to stop!

On the downside, I was feeling the love from my legs this morning only to be thwarted by every red light (I'm a shameless stopper), slow driver, and (dare I say it) slow cyclist. Terrible to see so many cyclists out and about ;)

I had a nice ride in this morning, I had a physio appointment near the train station in Heidelberg, so instead of going all the way down to the MYT I went up Studley road, along Heidelberg Road and Kenilworth Pde. Then I caught sight of another cycle commuter who seemed to know where he was going, so I followed his lead (trying to stay 3-4 meters back) until we reached Heidelberg Rd again. From there I was dropped and went through Clifton Hill and down Smith St and Gertrude St to the CBD.

I did witness some sill riding, with one commuter darting across the intersection and then across traffic to turn right onto Albert St.

Great conditions in Melbourne for yesterday afternoon's commute back, and into the CBD this morning. Achieved some of my better times both ways.

Where did you have the issue? MYT or Koonung? I do the MYT through to Banksia Rd and then head up to Greensborough and beyond, but my issues are mainly peds wandering about all agog or just oblivious...

Good ride in this morning!

Got a bit brave, moving on to the road where in the past I would have stuck to the footpath, nothing scared me off :)

Tried out the "trainer" function of my new Garmin 800, using a previous ride as a pace setter, and turning it up 5%.
Beat it by about a minute and a half!

Impressions so far are that it's good when you don't have somebody to chase after, but probably not quite as good for motivation, as you have to keep looking down to see where you stand, instead of just looking ahead.

No near misses, no magpies, good weather, happy days :D

My concerns are on the GCT, mostly between Tooronga Rd and St Kevin's, with some maniacal overtaking manoeuvres that are too risky with such a density of riders. The path in that section can be quite narrow (especially under the Monash) and stupid moves will eventually result in a serious off.

There are loads of new riders about, and if more experienced riders are going to ride like they're entitled to use the place for their own ITT purposes, maybe they should get on the road.

Oh ok, I don't use the GCT, but even during my commutes (off-peak), I see plenty of riders heading up/down the bridge to GCT at Yarra Boulevard. Looks like a pretty busy route.

First day in a while I've had an okay run with the wind on the way home, but... Got a bit unlucky with cramps in my calves half the way home.. Any tips on eliminating that would be great! Maybe I've just been pushing a little too much too quickly?

Anyway, despite the cramps, I had a pretty good run! Snagged two easy KOMs, and beat my PR for the entire run by 90 seconds.

No stories to tell with traffic, everyone was pretty sensible today surprisingly! :D

Then got home and fitted my shiny new Ultegra 11-28 rear cassette! Pretty eventful day I'd say. :)

Stretch beforehand? Or maybe you might be deficient in whatever essential mineral it is (potassium?).

Internet told me some other things that may help: http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Cramps

I'm hoping the hot northerly pushes me all the way home in the evening!!

You and I do the same route (except I stop at Heidelberg and you keep going)

If you see someone on a dirty, green/black/white cyclocross bike with topeak turnbag/pannier it's probably me. :)

That rather depends which way you are heading. Getting to work today was slow and hard. Riding home, along the beach, was a hell of a lot faster.

I ride the GCT daily and have noticed a large increase in cyclists in the last 2 weeks. It adds a lot of time to my ride. I now ride later to avoid the peaks.

I alternate my routes heading back for a change of scenery, but I'll keep an eye out for you. I usually hit Banksia around 4pm.
My bike is a black Soma CX with grey/black Ortlieb panniers:
