Are you serious? Bikes that won't fit a 25 must be a rare thing.

You only really need 3mm around the tyre.

Well anything that keeps your rims of the pavement!
So your thinking thats not helpful, but it is, because as long as you are happy that is all that matters!
I'm one of those crazys that runs tubulars, why? I feel more comfortable and safer on them! Wheather they are better or not is my choice. The idea that one tyre is better than another is a long discussed topic that will never be answered, so really who knows!

Pick your poision and keep pedalling!

Many of the aero bikes don't fit 25mm, I have a veloflex 25 (really 24.something) tub on the back of my cervelo s5, it just fits. The front is a no go as the tyre sits very close to the front down tube.

Some of the clinchers aren't round either, more like a teardrop so sit higher, so between brands can vary in height. Also, some bikes have narrow spacing near the front of the chain stay. So don't assume bigger tyres will fit, check and measure first.

Finally a puncture after fitting Mr Tuffy's Utlralight tyre liners.

Pulled out the piece of glass which caused the puncture, then went round the tyre picking out all the glass.

Decided to throw out the tyre and replace it as there was more holes than un pierced/pockmarked tyre.

Ordinarily would have thrown it out months ago... would have had countless punctures without the liner. Hence making tyres more cost effective... .grand! :D

I must be dreadfully unlucky then because my late 09 Apollo, 02 Velo Ecosse and 91 Tarini are all 23mm max. In the case of the Apollo i can't even get a 25mm shod rear wheel into the frame, let alone ride on it. Just another reason to stick with proper bikes that have 27" wheels :P .

Bikes built from the mid 80's and back are so much more adaptible.

You mean like the Reynolds tubed frame (possibly a Raleigh Grand Prix) i had that wouldn't take anything bigger than 21s? . But that aberration aside, absolutely. Not to mention they are so easy to find for nothing :) .

Got a schwalbe marathon green guard on my new rear wheel. I reckon it rolls a bit better than the SMP. I'll keep posting on the wear.
Durano plus on the front seems a pretty good compromise too.

Wondering if I am second guessing myself for no reason. Considering a tyre size change after my commuting accident a few weeks ago on the wet. Only changed to 28 SMP's a couple weeks before accident, and had the bike slide out from under me with slight brake pressure. Considering going back to 32's or 35's and maybe different rubber. Any opinions?

I'm not sure SMP's are the gripiest tyres around in the wet.
I'm liking my current combo. The green guard feels a touch better in that regard and the durano plus on the front has certainly got more feel.
Both are 25's. I can't fit anything bigger but don't like the lumbering feel of truck tyres anyway.

For the tubular riders;

Managed to source a really good value cotton tyre made in thai. It is a 23 300gram butyl tube construction with a removable value for adding your favourite sealant.

I just received them last week and they look really good and are amazingly cheap. Just need to try tnem now and see how they ride and stand up to everyday commuting.

IF they pass all my criteria, may pedal them to the perth community.

I just had to retire my second Schwalbe Marathon Supreme after 5,000km.
The tyre developed a deformation like an egg that resulted in the tyre having both a flat spot and a wobble.
The deformation was plainly obvious to the naked eye.

So, one dead tyre at 900km due to sidewall tear, one dead at 5,000km due to deformation.

At $58 each, they represent poor value. Maybe I got a dodgy batch? I won't be buying them
again in a hurry, so I now have an SMP on the front and rear again. At $34 each they are superior in every way (except the weight!). As a commuter I'll take the reliability over the weight.

5000km sounds great to me. What were you hoping for?

Maybe 50000km :P

So if you get 5000km out of a tyre that cost you 50 dollars, that is a cent per kilometre right, per tyre?
So that is not good value? :?

I just replaced my SMP after 26,000km. I expect a minimum of 12,000km from a commuter tyre, which means one set of tyres a year. I usually get around 15,000km from an an SMP when used solely as a rear tyre. The 26,000km tyre started on the front and lasted an extra 6,000km on the rear.

The Marathon Supreme would still be going if it hadn't gone all egg shaped. It is like the tread has delaminated from the casing. The rubber is still in excellent condition otherwise.

The plus is a completely different tyre though. They should be named differently as they are nothing a like. Unrealistic expectations I feel. No disrespect intended.

Delamination has been a recurring problem since Schwalbe moved production to Indonesia.

They had to recall the Ultremo but I've seen quite a few reports about the problem affecting other Schwalbe models.

Yes and no. The supreme is sold as having almost equivalent puncture protection at a fraction of the weight. Both of my supremes have had to retired long before the rubber itself was worn. I was not expecting 25,000km as this was more a test of whether it made commuting easier/faster with minimal loss of puncture protection.
The tread pattern on the 5,000km supreme is not even half gone, but the tyre is now unusable due to the deformation.

ironically, on my ride this morning with two new marathon plus tyres, the ride felt smoother and was 1km/h faster on the avg speed. Not really scientific, but essentially the supremes made no difference at all to my commute times.
