If you use a different tyre on the rear, you'll be putting in a new rear tyre whilst still having an older one on the front. That may or may not be an issue.

Great grip in the wet, made out of kevlar, dual compound and water channels. Seen me through the worst Sydney weather no problems.

Doesn't look like a very commuting bike setup.ItsDank wrote:This is the ultimate commuter tire.

No but they do slip under pressure. The channels grip onto the slightly bumpy tarmac.yugyug wrote:Water channels is Marketting BS. bicycles don't hydroplane.ItsDank wrote:This is the ultimate commuter tire.

I thought they were to direct spray to the side instead of in your face or up your back.ItsDank wrote:No but they do slip under pressure. If that was the case then they would not be water channels but just like regular tread. And it's well known that tread on bicycles is also marketing-based design, as opposed to functional design, for the same reason, except when the ground surface is softer than the tire and able to be displaced by the tire, as in mountain biking and cyclocross. On a road which is harder than the tire, all tread does is needlessly give up space for traction.ItsDank wrote:No but they do slip under pressure. I haven't heard that before. I dunno, doesn't sound right, water spray flies off a tire pretty fast, I doubt a tread pattern could direct it in any consequential way.kb wrote:I thought they were to direct spray to the side instead of in your face or up your back.ItsDank wrote:No but they do slip under pressure. Get a fender if that's an issue?

My bike is a bit sensitive about her weight and I wouldn't want to "a fender"yugyug wrote:kb wrote: Get a fender if that's an issue?

The tread pattern makes minimal difference on a bike wheel as they are so skinny and the tread blocks themselves aren't that big. There isn't enough surface area for it to be that noticeable compared to something like a car tyre where tread pattern does displace water differently.yugyug wrote:I haven't heard that before. Not 100% correct. Yep. Bicycles don't aquaplane but in the rain when youre cornering traction is a different story.yugyug wrote:Water channels is Marketting BS. bicycles don't hydroplane.

Err... 2.100km now, wear indicators of the rear wheel are gone. It's not yet square, but not round as well. May take another 1-1.500 before puncture streak. Well, I did not expect it to live long.skydance wrote:opted for GP 4000S2. Let's see how it goes. Can't say for longevity, but that beast has fantastic grip even on wet (ish) roads.
Wonder if GP4000s2 (front) and Gatorskin (rear) makes any sense.

I still like 23's on the roadie but I'd go bigger on the commuter (25's) I must admit.singlespeedscott wrote:Only avalible in a 23mm. A bit undersized in this day and age.warthog1 wrote:http://road.cc/content/review/114022-mi ... grip-tyres
I've got narrow rims btw.
Does seem strange they haven't got them bigger.
I run the old leather specials on the commuter anyway, makes the roadie feel like a rocket as they ride like crud.

Note I said "probably", but here's some wind tunnel tests on various tyres on the same wheel:singlespeedscott wrote:I don't think it would have any measurable effect at all. I would like to see a statistical analysis that would prove it so.

My take on that chart is that the small amount of tread / surface roughness aids the airflow around the wheel. The slick (no tread) tyres tend to stall earlier.
Does it matter on a commuter? Not likely... I said "more effect", not "significant effect"
