I would be hard pressed to say I like riding in the rain. However...
I don't mind riding in the rain when...
... it starts raining after I've started riding. I can't bring up the motivation to head out into the rain when I'm nice and dry.
... it's summer and the rain is not actually cold.
... when I get to work drenched from head to toe, and others are complaining about getting rained on just getting off the bus. I can think HTFU people! (maybe slightly contrary to point 1 though lol )
... once it starts raining in Sydney - traffic comes to a standstill, making riding a bike that much more rewarding

That's the exact reason why the minority of rain ride lovers need these threads to mend their psychiatric complexes. They are not normal!ni78ck wrote:why not start a thread of "why i hate riding in the rain"

...I've been out on a really long ride, hot and sweaty on a humid day, and the heavens open to cool me down.
Aside from that, not too many positives of riding in the rain for me. And when it's dark and raining then doubly more negative for me.

Other than that and apart from wet socks, I'm not sitting in a stinking train carriage/bus with all the happy shiny people.
The problem this has created is that when I have to go to meetings in other buildings, and it's raining, I don't bother with an umbrella and turn up wet. Strange looks. Need to work on that one.

I hate riding in the rain because... Too many other road users don't change their behaviour to compensate for the changed conditions.

I really enjoy summer rain. I love how it can turn a horridly humid ride into a cool, refreshing experience. Winter rain, on the other hand.... well, at least it still puts me in touch with nature.

Another think I like about riding in the rain is it sparks the odd interesting conversation at work. It usually begins with something like "You rode to work in THAT weather?" It's then followed by headshakes and gestures indicating they think I must be nucking futs.

There's a fine line between bravery and foolishness and I'd like to think cyclists riding in the rain tend to fall on the former sideFletcher wrote: Another think I like about riding in the rain is it sparks the odd interesting conversation at work. It did rain here a few weeks ago, and I arrived at work with a thoroughly wet arse ! - half an hour later and me and everything else were bone dry again.sim-o wrote:Rain? What's that? We don't have this concept of "rain" in Perth.

... I like not being able to see a darn thing because of glasses that fog up whenever I stop at the traffic lights
... I like tools that don't adjust their driving to the conditions
... I especially like the effect of water on line-marking paint and/or smooth concrete

e.g.
I drove my car in the rain. So what who cares.
I flew to New Zealand to jump out of a plane. Wowwhatathrill!
I rode my bicycle in the rain. You crazy.
I like it because if every day is sunny I get lazy: I don't clean my rims, I forget to lube my chain, I don't put my cycling shirt in the wash so it's ready the next day, I might forget to charge my batteries. Rain, night time, cold etc force me to be more disciplined.
Also because I have fenders and wet weather gear, and want to use them.

I definitely agree with this one. I normally avoid riding in the rain because I'm soft. But when I do I love it. Especially the torrential downpour last week in Melbourne. Motorists just look out and think poor you. But I have a bigger smile than they do!

- I like riding in the rain because there's no pedestrians on the shared cycleways (especially the little tackers that have no idea which way to jump when you bell them).

But what I DON'T like is cleaning bikes afterward.
