Beating the system - the cycling commuting section
I've just started commuting to work its 11.4km each way total of 22.8km. The only time spent on the road is a short trip to the Bike track and the last hope to my work, where I have a good bike rack in the work garage. On a good day with minimal traffic delays I can do it in 25mins or so, turns out being quicker than driving to work and trying to find a park and walk
Just under 38km to work, around the same home unless I do half a lap of the lake first which still gets in under 40k.
Funny that this thread is in the serious biking sub forum but the longest poll option tops out at 15k .

I commute 20K in and 20K home each day from Manly West to George Street Brisbane. Fridays I usually find a different way home either via Gateway Bridge, North or through Carindale on the South which adds about 10K to my commute but breaks the monotony of Wynnum road.

28k each way.
south morang - lalor - thomastown - resevoir - preston - st georges road, then to docklands via the capital city trail.
pretty fun commute, the quickest it has taken me has been 52 mins ( riding time, overall time was 57 min )
love me a tailwind in the morning!
As I'm no longer working on St Kilda Rd, but at Abbotsford I am either catching the train from home to Box Hill and riding down Whitehorse Rd and Elgar Rd to the Koonung and Main Yarra Trails or catching a lift with a mate to Ashwood Reserve and riding the Gardiners Creek Trail to St Kevin's and then turning onto the Boulevard and MYT. Both are about 18.4 km each way, and both have a smattering of climbs as well. I try and get out there 4 days a week (since I work from home 1 day a week).
And occasionally I still ride the 45-50km all the way home to Upwey. Depending on the route, I can even do it in about 40km, but that involves too much commuter traffic for me depending on the day I've had.
I'm thinking of starting a commute from Riverwood to Liverpool hospital in Sydney. I'm starting as a doctor there in January. The commute is about 20km each way. Anyone familiar with that stretch of the M5?

My commute is 36km round trip West Preston-Melbourne Airport-West Preston, the quickest I have done one way is 50mins average speed is only 18km. Most of the commute is along the Moonee Ponds Creek trail with only one hill that gives me trouble,the Gaffney St hill
My commute is still sitting at 17.5Kms each way, and 40 minutesmoving/45minutes total (usually).
I am going to have a look at extending it a bit to try and have a solid hour ride - especially of an evening.

I haven't seen anyone do that distance consistently - maybe if you're out of the city and have a clean route into work you could do it. Time would also be an issue - that's 4hrs+ on the bike every day.
Would really shake up the commuter challenge - more than 25000km for the year

1. How many days a week
2. Are you going to be doing it both ways
3. What backups are in place for equipment failures...ie public transport close by
4. What sort of fitness do you have currently
In particular to the last question I raised I have this for comment. I commute 45 each way, door to door. Last year there was a lot of five day weeks with over 500 k's for the weeks. When I started doing my commute I found it hard to just back up the commutes in the morning let alone the arvos. I started my commuting by catching the train home of the afternoons. I slowly built things up to the point of riding to and from work. Last year I also increased how many k's I was doing.
What I found was that doing such distances does take it out of you, especially if you have bad headwinds.
But I do believe 65 k's each way is doable.
1. Initially, planning to do it twice a week
2. both ways, plan to leave home by 6AM (@25kmh), should be there by 8:30 enough time for a quick shower for a 9am start.
3. Public transport, maybe there is but not all sections of the planned commute
4. I tried riding it once on a road bike, my average was 29kmh. I do 80km bunch rides on weekends which involves rolling hills and a 5km hill climb. You are right, the question would be, could I back it up in the afternoon.
Twice a week then is very doable. Just be aware that you have to factor in flats and so forth, not an issue if start time is flexible. Dont need public transport on every section, as long as you can get to some somewhere along your route.
Key to backing up I have found is plenty of food..ie energy. The pace home can be slower than in the morning so that doesnt have to be a worry but you need the energy. Your bunch rides should make it easier to do first up and you will slowly get stronger and used to it...I did.
I'm currently building up my weekly commutes, with the head winds we had Tuesday when I woke up my legs where jelly! I'm on the bike roughly 3 hours pending which way I ride home etc, if I can get to do it 3 times a week I'll be happy! That's still 210km till Ivan get my fitness up to back it up each day!
I'm planning on doing a 47km commute a few days a week. All country roads, between 2 towns, and trying to avoid the major highway as much as possible. Fortunately I will be finishing at around 3.10pm so plenty of time to get home.
I'm also lucky that a colleague has a work van that I can put the bike into should I need to not ride home.
Are there any obvious issues I should consider before contemplating this?
