North St Marys to Wentworthville (NSW) 23km by the shortest route, best time is exactly 60 minutes actual wheels turning time, in fact 65 minutes including stopping at lights and motorway ramps (leaving home 4.20am for a 5.30am start, return trip starts 1.30pm and generally takes a bit longer). Sometimes I work at other locations so it varies between 22km and about 32km.

26-28 each way but often leave a car at work and ride home then ride to work the next day. Well thats my fantasy anyway.

28km and includes the entire length of the Hoddle Highway.

I take the train then ride my bike the last 1.5km. I'm one of those people who use the Parkiteer cages backward to everyone else.

Hills or flat?

If flat, 40k is easy. If hills, on the other hand, welcome to it... :)
Haha this was in 2006!! I guess I can give an update. So I eventually bought a roadie, that same one I have now and would drive 25 mins to cheltenham train station and ride 30kms each way to work/uni. It was great and I used to ride 3-4 times a week. Then I graduated uni, travelled overseas 2 yrs and now am a consultant who flies out to work on mon and back on friday so I don't get to commute anymore :(

38km each way and I get to do it nearly every day.

I have to travel a bit so this gets in the way sometimes, mind you I get to take my bike with me on most occassions.

27k to work and 29 home. 34 home if I have meetings cause the road is not as inviting at 5.30 as it is at 3.30. With a ride on Thursdays for a course it amounts to 300k a week. JC where do you go each day. I go from Tuggeranong to Campbell at about 7 in the morning.

Currently 8 in, 10 back, going to go to 20 each way in a couple weeks. Looking forward to it, but methinks that those aero bars might be necessary to get some more positions, because 200kms a week is pretty epic IMO

I have basically 3 options 30 kms, 50 kms or 70 kms per day, which it is depends mainly on the wind direction. Last week I did 232 kms and the week before 275 kms. I started off only riding when I felt like but made the decision to ride every day about a year ago and haven't looked back since.
It would not be at all strange if history came to the conclusion that the perfection of the bicycle was the greatest achievement of the nineteenth century.

I have about a 10km commute each way - but no nice days like today I will often ride further for the pleasure of it.

Especially if I have the company of one of my work mates in the afternoon. It is much more fun to ride with company. :D :D
Not fast, no style, but still get there.

lengh of commute

Postby Ozkaban » Tue Nov 29, 2011 7:59 pm

I drive to Telopea and then ride the last 6-7k into work. I'm lucky enough to be able to go for 1hr bike rides from work during lunch which gets the kms up.

I've ridden Berowra to Parramatta once (36km), and am planning the second one very soon. The kicker isn't the 200m drop in the morning, but the 200m climb in the arvo when you're stuffed from work :) think I just need to HTFU...

Oh yeah, and having to pick up kids 3-4 times per week after school kinda puts a stop to bike commuting too... Distances involved and kids ages don't work with bike commuting.

holy smoke guys  I thought I was hardcore doing 10 in and out rail hail or shine.

I probably wouldn't mind too much for a 20-30 km ride as long as a HUGE part of it was on a fast veloway/quiet road. I could use my roadie instead of my commuter. Hmmm but then again I stop/do things on the way home, so I need panniers most days.

16.5km in, between 18 and 23km home, depending which way I feel like going.

I ride a hybrid with panniers - it's too hot for a backpack here in SEQ. Five days a week, rain or shine.

6km there and 6km back

I know it’s not hardcore but to be honest if it were much longer I probably wouldn’t have considered commuting by bike.

Actually funny story about how I got started. I had my first ever car accident in my 23 years of driving. It wasn’t my fault as someone in a rush failed to give way. The insurance company and the panel beaters were having a serious tiff over how much the repairs should cost. Whilst they were arguing I still had to get to work. So I walked. I like to think that I’m an intelligent kinda guy but I walked to and from work for two whole weeks whilst my trusty Kona Blast Deluxe MTB Hard Tail sat patiently in my spare room  When I realised my stupidity I laughed at myself long and hard  but it was at that moment my car was repaired.

Fast forward about 6 months, the weathers gotten better, I’ve gotten even fatter and driving just isn’t doing it for me anymore. I was nursing a hang over and spent the weekend reading various bike forums in particular anything to do with commuting. I plucked up the courage and started riding to work. The plan is to sell the car, or just take it to a wreckers when the rego expires. That’s 3 months I’ve got to iron out the bugs in my plan and it gives me plenty of time to work out what to do when it rains. Presently I just drive if it’s raining or I have a pressing engagement in the afternoon. I’m a blue collar worker so I don’t need to be presentable for clients at work. I don’t know how you office johnnies do it.

Set a new PB for going to work this morning ..... 22.1 km:hr knoboly tyres and all. Really pleased with that 8) Psyched myself up to break that on the way home but had to fight a headwind all the way + traffic is a pain on my return journey.

I'm only 7k from the BNE CBD radially but it's 12.5k on our crazy bike network. If I have time my default is the 13.5k option that follows the bike path a bit more. :)

Good onya KC, it gets easier (and funner) with practice
Seeing as you are doing so well and are a Kona Man, why not get yourself a Kona Honky Inc as a Xmas pressie? By all reports from members here, thay are a stunning ride, not to mention that they look amazing 8) I love my 2yo Kona DewDrop commuter 8)
