lengh of commuteRe: lengh of commuteKind of awkward voting as my commute is spot on 10kms each way
Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.
Re: lengh of commuteWhere's the "varies" and "25km" options?
My wife commutes 77k each way, but she wimps out by doing the middle 69ks on the train. There are many types of racing cyclists. There is the sprinter, the rouleur, the stagiaire, the danser, the descender.... sadly, I'm a mediocre.

Re: lengh of commuteMy commute is 37km one way but I drive to work Monday and drive back Friday. I leave my car at the office as I need it to get around during work.
If it rains, I don't ride so I have to plan my week pretty well or I might not be able to get to work if I left my car at work and it is raining in the morning. I might add that riding to work is definitely slower for me than driving on country roads.Riding is purely for fun Jon Jon's bikes.......

Re: lengh of commute6.6kms each way for me with mostly flat cycleway and only about 500m on busy-ish roads, but so many options for upping the distance. 30km with a short lap of Glenrock on the MTB. 12km-15km on 90% cycleway. 8.5km with 60-70% bush riding and only crossing main roads, not using them. Some nasty hills for training on road.

Same, it's hard.
Re: lengh of commuteI'm out of commission at the moment, but am planning on taking a shot at my 38km commute when I get some time up in the saddle. Is that too much to bite off for a newbie?
Re: lengh of commute
nah, but might be worth a dummy run (non work day) to see how long it takes before committing and finding out you'll be late to work 3/4 the way there. bychosis (bahy-koh-sis): A mental disorder characterised by symptoms, such as delusions or hallucinations, that indicate impaired contact with reality not containing bicycles.
Re: lengh of commuteFor me, just a bit over 38kms each way. I try to do this twice a week but don't always manage the second ride. In the morning, it takes me between 1hr20mins and 1hr25mins, but on the way home, I get all the uphills so it's about 1hr45mins on average for the homebound trip.
I'm a bit hesitant to aim for three times a week, mostly because of time and the effort it would take, but also because I think I'm damaging the bike with all the kms. It's a new bike but already has a squeak in the headset unfortunately. Doing longer kms also means more maintenance. I noticed the chain gets filthy after about four return trips, even though it's all on-road riding. Not sure how I've managed it, but I've been able to avoid riding in the rain for the whole year! Not a single drop on me
Re: lengh of commuteAs for many of the other folks my commute doesn't fit the poll: 17.5km to work, and depending on whether I take scenic, semi-scenic or commute route home: 23, 20 or 17.5km home. 4 days/week.
Re: lengh of commuteMy commute is 42 km each way so couldn't complete the poll

Re: lengh of commute33km is the short way for me.
Re: lengh of commuteWell I've just started riding to And from work, 23km each wAy taken 50 minutes to ride there and around 45 to ride home, did it Monday and Tuesday, had a brake today as legs r killing me, see how I go tomorrow I guess

Re: length of commuteMy commute is 39.6km each way. It takes me just under 1.5hrs each way. I only do it 2 days a week. I ride from Ipswich to Taringa (and back again in the afternoon). The worst of it is the dice with the summer storms. No hail yet, but plenty of rain!! I plan to add a third day in, but I can only do it when my wife and kids allow me.
Re: lengh of commuteJust to add to this annoying poll, I have two forms of commute: one is 5km each way with a train ride (I can take my bike on the train as I'm travelling counter-peak both ways). The other varies from 20km each way (short home-work distance) to a touch over 30km each way (longer distance), depending on factors such as how I feel, previous riding, weather, etc.

Re: lengh of commute43km's each way for me. I ride from Thornlands Brisbane Bayside in to Fortitude Valley and then back home. I do this three sometimes 4 times a week. Love it.
In fact driving my car annoys the hell out of me! Wouldn't mind riding with any others that do this route. Cheers, Matt
Re: lengh of commute6km each way now...
A year ago it was 27km each way. When I first started 15 months ago, it would take me two hours to do that 27km, and I would have to drive the return leg. This week I did a test ride back out to where I used to live to see how long it would take me now, and I did it in 1 hour 10 mins, and I did the full return leg plus another 12 km all in one shot. Ahh... The joys of maintaining your fitness...
Re: length of commute
No, not on the Ipswich Hwy! I did see someone do it Monday afternoon though, hope they made it home for Christmas! There are roads now that travel beside the Hwy, it is a pretty quiet ride considering how many people go in the same direction only 100m to your side....
Re: lengh of commute
I measured it the other day...its pretty much 34km each way from Richlands to Bowen hills. I currently do this 3 times a week. Old Weekday Commuter - 2004 Argon 18 Radon - Full Ulterga - RS30

Re: lengh of commuteOh man... recently changed jobs. The commute... pfew!!!!
3.1km, dead flat, straigt line almost (one corner at each end). Perfect hot mix surface, no lights. What can I say!

Re: lengh of commute16km to my work... although I havent done it yet.
I've only had the bike for 2 weeks, and nearly got taken out by a car after 5 days, causing me to crash. I've gone half the way there and back though, just to see that I could cover the distance. Its amazing how much more hilly the road is when riding - I know this seems obvious, but I'd never really paid attention to the little hills before. And while I managed to cover the distance, I know I havent even covered the hardest terrain of the ride yet, nor have I been through the most treacherous part during peak hour. I think my commute may well become closer to 19-20km just so I can avoid the most dangerous roads.
Re: lengh of commute
Cycling certainly gives you an appreciation for geography!
It's well worth finding a low-traffic route - the best route on a bike is almost never the same one you'd take in a car. John
