what's your average speed?

Postby Tomca74 » Wed Dec 18, 2013 11:03 pm

I'm no athlete and don't do any bunch rides, just my commute mainly. Done a forum search on average speeds and results are all over the place. So I'm wondering how bad is that or is it acceptable effort for work commutes.

I do 10-19km each way, depending on where I am working. Average speeds are around 24km/h on my commuter, 28km/h on my old steel road bike.

I reckon mine would not be more than 20 and that is optimistic. That is if I consider that I would have to do a fair bit at 30 to get that average.

depends on the commute, mine is 40km, with 32km of PSP with a single intersection, the 2km in the CBD does slow the average down quite a bit.

My speeds vary, top average in over 35kph on TT bike with tailwind. Average is probably close to 30kph and slowest (sans flats and major detours) 27kph.

This year 22.4 - just the commuting kms. I know that some times on the way home I do average over 40 as I have done the 9kms in 12 min. but this is very rare.

I much prefer the slow ride.
Not fast, no style, but still get there.

Average for me on my commute to and from work (13km) is about 22km/h. I don't bust a gut. I ride to complete, not to compete. :-)

Comparing the average speeds of different commuters on different routes is a bit of a waste of time and the conditions - hills, traffic lights/intersections, paths etc - are all different. My commute has ~400M to 500M (depends on where you get the data from) climbing each way over 23.5km to/24km return. Over summer there is a headwind in both directions most of the time. This year I have done it with average speeds of 19km/h after a 492km ride over the previous weekend (a DNFed 600km brevet :() to ~28km/h (I think I had fresh legs - not sure ;)). Most of the time it's ~23.5km/h on my CX and ~25km/h on my roadies.

It's partly why the smug look on a Cat 6/Commuter Grade racer when passing you is a little ridiculous too.

perfectly acceptable...mainly because that's roughly what I manage :D (though the commuter gets to do some sneaky singletrack which might slow it down a bit)
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

On my roadie, 29-31 depending on the usual wind conditions. 25-28 on my steel SS. My commute is ~18km each way. That said, I don't carry much more than my phone, wallet and security pass, and occasionally some coffee supplies.

My route is 75% PSP and then 25% city streets, hitting every light on the way. -_-

I go ~18 kms each way, and I've been getting faster lately, currently hitting around 26Km/h for 40 minutes riding time.

I don't bust my a$$ to get those rough averages, a few hills, 2 sets of lights. I am just glad I am not a slug

When I was commuting (4km both ways - I got sick of walking) my average was about 16-20km/h thanks to a steep hill (lots of fun on the way back), a couple of traffic lights and a couple of right hand turns.

I've got a friend who sometimes will average 15Km/h on his rides. I remember we went from Rydalmere to Tempe station (bay to bay) and back which took about 4 hours once.

I aim to do my 38km at an average of 30kmh, into the wind I'm normally around 27, wind behind me I'm up to 32. The route is about 90% psp and the average is taken from endomondo which I have set to auto pause when I'm stationary. I only started riding this year and at the start of the year I was at about 25kmh over 18kms so I've improved a lot, but I have done nearly 4000k's

Hi colin,
Are you seriously saying you cant get a geared unicycle? :)
I reckon that most don't attain the speeds they think they do...except maybe the commuters that can clock their rides.
Taking the wife along sure breaks down the averages, but I wouldn't have it an other way. :)

You can get a 1:1.5 gearing though most people who get them fitted don't stick with them for long. Even with the tenuous theoretical 50% extra, I'd be way slower than you lot anyway. Just gotta stay happy as I am. :D

Riding larger and larger gear inches really affect the nature of unicycling and, probably, the marginal benefit of an extra, say, 30% speed is hardly worth chasing.

The gearbox will also set you back a couple of grand. Ouch.

Just looked at my 2013 stats.
Overall avge: 23.1km/h (total commuting kms/total commuting hrs). That includes a few MTB rides on the way in that are slower due to terrain. Normal straight commute with normal effort is about 26-27km/h, fast commute is 29-30km/h. Going home is slower due to prevailing headwinds and increased uphill riding at 23-24km/h normal and 26-28km/h fast.

Glad I've got 2 wheels and gears :)

Self-deprecation is a part of Auzzie tradition. Better to take myself down before someone else does.

Good to see it is not entirely lost in the generation of Facebook, Youtube and Strava.

Averaging around 23-25kmh. I still question it every time I ride lol.
