worzel wrote:I started commuting from near Joondalup to Perth (32km each way) two days per week at the end of November having hardly ridden a bike for 30 years. In that time I have increased my average moving speed from about 20 to 25kph (and rode about 1000km / lost 7kg) depending on wind direction/speed. According to Map My Ride I have some 5km segments around the 30kph mark midway but it is the Joondalup end of the route which hurts my average. I have a 2km climb to the freeway PSP in the morning which I treat gently as a warm up and there is a series of long climbs from Whitfords to Moore Drive on the way back gaining something like 40m altitude.

I am really happy with those speeds on my commuter bike for a fat bloke of 44. The main improvement I have noticed is on the short-medium hills where I used to labour up in lowest gear after about 20m and now I attack all but the worst. It’s just that stretch home around Ocean Reef which keeps getting steeper when I have already done about 25km on a hot day that hurts so bad.

I am already thinking of trading up for a race bike in search of reducing my commute time (75-80 minutes + stoppages) and maybe joining a club if I can get near 30kph. But losing another 5kg is probably the first thing to work on.

we must pass the same way on occasions then, I commute from Clarkson into the City (38km), but i only do one way per day for 4 days of the week.

I commute a few times per week from Cronulla to Randwick (Sydney), approx 26km each way.
Morning is slower, maybe 24-25km/h since I don't want to be sweating like a hog when I get to work. Home is faster as I ride harder and sometimes have a tailwind so anywhere from 26-30km/h.
I'm on a singlespeed, with a little gear to allow me to cruise in to work in the mornings. Hoping to up the gearing a bit tis year.

There are a few us making those sort of distances, but most turn off well before Joondalup. I used to work with a guy who cycled in from Mindarie occasionally and also know a guy from Kinross who did if before he broke his leg (couldn't get his leg out of the clips fast enough).

It had crossed my mind to go one way each day but for the time being I am doing one day on a protein diet, one day cycling 65km to mix it up.

I've tried both ways a few times but its a very slow ride home! Had some company most of the way this morning, guy in a water Corp vest on an amiata carbon roadie, picked me up between Joondalup and Edgewater.

I have been trying to choose my riding days carefully so that I don't have a strong headwind either direction and also avoid the hottest days (I also need to work around days where I have early / late meetings). Given this week's weather I could ride in any day, but can't see there being a day when it is pleasant to ride home. Picking up some company would make it more tolerable I guess.

TBH, I have a shoulder injury I am supposed to be resting so a week off is no bad thing (other than for my waistl ine). I promised myself I would have an early morning ride to Mullaloo and back if I wake early but with minimum overnight temps around 25C I am not sleeping well. I may have to settle for a weekend ride to keep my eye in. Shame because, back on topic, I had raised my average speeds to over 26kph last week.

I am currently hovering just above 20kph over 27km (starting about 10km out of the CBD and then going another 17km past it).

Good to know I'm not the only one tonking along comfortably around that pace, but I feel really effing slow compared to all those who blast past me during the first 10km approaching the city :|

This thread makes me feel a little better about my speed haha.. I have been averaging around 25k - 26km/h for my commute in the morning (did a week of 5km, a week of 15km and now doing 30km home to office - avg speed has remained around the same) and around 20km/h for the ride home. This is on a 29" hardtail MTB.

Tell me about it! My ride is from Aubin Grove (SOR - near Gibbs/Russel Rd) to the CBD and it feels like I must be the slowest rider in Perth haha.

I pushed hard to get an average speed of 26.2kmh over 49km on tonight's commute. There are a couple of hills that drag my average down but I try to make it up on the downside.

The odd times that I commute I average 26km for the 17.3km ride on a 26in rigid mountain bike.. nearly always have a head wind heading home... going to work is a bit quicker and also depend on if I am lugging the laptop and other crap

Flat out, I cracked the 27kph barrier this morning thanks to the absence of a head wind for the first time in ages. 32km in 70 mins and 9 seconds: only 10 seconds from a 69. :|

Mine varies. Fastest was something in the 38-40kph region as I took the race bike for that 10km trip as a commuter that day. Even smashed a few KOMs in the process. So much so someone flagged them because my average speed was higher than the speed limit by just a feeeeeeew kph :P (which I don't condone). But I average anywhere between 22-31kph depending on the route/to or from work/what I'm carrying/mood/bike I chose that day.

Mine's horrendous. I pass everyone, and have got my time as good as I reckon I can get it, but I spend nearly 1/5 of my commute time stationary. And because it's such a short ride it really eats into my avg speed. Best I've done is 21kph.

To get a better measure I timed myself, and stopped the timer at every red light or stop. Sure enough shaved more than 5 minutes off my time, and of course the avg speed went up. So I'm smashing it when I'm actually moving.

Strava reports average speed like this by default (except for segments).

My average is 16-17km/h for a 13km commute. But that includes a lot of time spent waiting at traffic lights on the bike lanes in the CBD, pushing my bike up or down the Harbour Bridge Steps, etc.

What surprised me is that my average is pretty much the same in either direction. There's much more downhill in the homeward journey but that doesn't seem to make me any faster going that way :?

28-31kph on my CX bike with knobblies, depending on how many times, and for how long, I have to stop. :-/ But I only have to ride 9km, with 2 significant climbs.

According to Strava, I've travelled 1,025.8 km year to date, and it's taken me 58 hours and 46 minutes. That makes my average speed 17.46 km/h. Not exactly TdF material, but then again they don't have to ride shared paths, carry their bikes up and down stairs, or stop at red lights.

Thanks to my new C4 with clipless pedals / shoes I finally broke the 70 minute barrier for my 32.5km ride in. That also broke the 28kph average mark for the first time. I am very happy with that considering 6 months / 2500km ago it was taking me 85 minutes. Strangely, I really wasn't feeling it today and thought I was struggling with a cold / head wind.

13km takes 30 mins give or take a few depending on traffic lights. So average 26-28kph I suppose.

My commute on my Avanti cadent 1.0 is 15k each way. I was averaging 25-28km/hr but recently replaced my compact with a 53/39 and am now pushing myself a bit more resulting in my average jumping up to 30-32km/hr. I am 175cm@90kg trying to get down below 80kg, its a struggle.
