Thanks Jason, yes, a fitting tribute to the challenge's ultra-commuter

I'll register my approval for the name change as well.

And Westy, I've certainly got my beady eye on you. I'll be doing weekly uploads from here.

Can't afford to keep missing commute days, bad enough when I only work a 4 day week :(

your commute is one of the longer ones so doing it 4 days doesn't hurt you too much

No that's what I mean, this week will only be 3 1/2 days commuting! Think tomorrow I'll need to leave a little early or go a different way to add some km's

jasonc, seeing as it's your challenge this year - what's the verdict on commutes involving a group ride?

One of the rides I attend is closer to the city than my house - can I count the kms to and from the ride for the challenge (not including the recreational bunch ride, obviously)

Next up, what if I ride out to the start of a bunch ride, do the ride in a loop back to the start, then ride home. As far as "replacing a car" goes, the kms to and from the ride should count, since I could otherwise drive there with the bike on the car.

Thoughts?

I'm with Ox... you should take a full recovery week and rest that ankle  Every time I think I have 3rd you do a midnight ride and take it back.

I've seen this question before, with respect to riding to the trail head for a group MTB ride. General consensus was that this is recreational riding, and not commuting.

+1 especially seeing I will be missing a week away on a sales conference in two weeks time.
Not fast, no style, but still get there.

nope. that's for recreation. the kms to and from the ride are warm up/cool down
if you were however to go straight to work after the ride (not via home) that'd count

The pressure of first place is starting to tell.
As a cyclist and a sporadic commuter who had never had much success with commuting, I saw a change of job and city as an opportunity to set myself up to the perfect commuting distance to combine the daily trip to work with enough cycling to keep me fit. I thought about 20K would be the go, 40 K return trip 5 days per week would give me a 200k base leaving enough room for a recreational ride on the weekend and maybe a race now and then.
6 months in I think I have underestimated the rigours of commuting. How can I always have a headwind? For anyone who knows Hobart it has a sea breeze that blows down the river in the morning and up the river in the afternoon. I have not driven to work this year but am thinking that I may limit my commute to 4 days per week.
I think Jasonc needs to take the lead back and take the pressure off me. It is hard at the front of the bunch, specially with the sea breeze.

Well I have finally got to logging in my Kms for the second time this year - I will be trying to log weekly from now on.

That said there will be no riding next week due to having to be away at a sales conference - Oh well it is a lot harder on Mrs Westab having our three great kids by herself - I know she will cope as she is just wonderful (but it is still hard).

Looking forward to making up for the lost kms on my retrurn. :D

Yes, I'm away after Monday next week myself... but I am taking the MTB with me, so be looking for 'commute opportunities'. If I pack light enough, I might be able to ditch the lift from the airport and ride to my accommodation - would be a great but unlikely start.
