Beating the system - the cycling commuting section

I try to ride to work the 18km commute one way a few days a week, the only days I don't ride is when I start work at 530am, I drive. I would like to ride when I start early but I would have to leave home no later than 430am,and I don't think I would be up to the 18km ride at that hour . Just interested to know what is the earliest anyone leaves to commute.
I'm probably not your normal commuter, with my current fitness I only do it a few times a week, but if I'm on earlies I leave home at 2:30 am to ride 30km's to work! Start 4 am. On arvo's I don't finish till 1, 2 am so I normally get home around an hour, night commute home is only 28kms but I go straight through the city and am on most the man roads as there is no traffic
At least once a week I have an 0500 start which sees me away from home at 0415 for the 15 km commute. This is done at a more relaxed pace so that a shower on arrival is not necessay.
There are also times when I have an 0430 start at a location a bit closer to home, which means an 0400 start. Personally, I enjoy the early rides, nice and cool and very quiet on the road.

I commute 1 week a month and leave home around just after 5 ....I pick my own hours but like to be ahead of the traffic... normally finish at 4, again trying to stay ahead of the rush out of the city.
When I am working away from home I still get up the same time for a ride before work and my weekend rides are the same time or earlier... Try and get home as the family is getting out of bed so 4 - 4:30 mornings are the norm for me

I leave at 4:45am to do a 50km commute. In Brisbane it is already light at that time (in summer) and for me that's the best time of the day, so I have no issues with the early start. You just need to get into the habit - there are some other threads about getting ready the night before, sleep etc.
Wow some early start there. I finally done my first early commute today leaving home at 420am and arriving at work at 510am,18km.Best commute I have ever done nice and cool no wind and NO cars!. The ride home was a bit hard temp around 35C but I did have a nice tail wind.
0645hrs depart. approx 0720hrs arrive. Plenty of time for shower and emails before first conference call at 0800hrs. Still not too hot at that time and traffic is bad anytime in Sydney!!

I start at 7am. have a shower and coffee before. only a 12km commute, 30-40mins depending on the legs.
This year I have started to get up at 4.30am 2 mornings a week to get a decent distance/paced ride in to help my dropping fitness. Being superorganisd in terms of clothes/lunches/breakfasts etc is necessary.
I don't really commute since work is 2 km from home, but I do 95% of my riding early. Average start 2am, want to be home by about 5:30, so usually have a good 3 hr window. Occasionally it 1am, or even midnight. I go to bed before 7pm usually. I have, on very rare occasions, found myself awake at 11pm and gone riding. People think you are strange when you have done a 6 hr ride before coming to work, lol.
This is true, and can be the hardest or easiest part. Some years ago I used to be a notorious sleep inner, I could sleep until 9 if I wanted to, and used to be up until 11pm, midnight, 1am at times.
We got a new puppy in June of this year, and while I have changed a little to be an earlier riser I committed to walking our two dogs every day before work and on rising on weekends.
I would set my alarm for 5.10am and get up, dress, wash my face and grab the dog leads. We would be out the door by 5.20am.
Go for a brisk walk, come home, shower and then the rest of the routine was my old routine but I'd done half an hour exercise before breakfast.
It's now habit/routine and I can't even sleep in successfully on weekends any more.
Start off with an "I've just got to do it" mentality and you will train yourself.
Up at 5am, on bike by 5.30am, at work by 6am (13km). Time for shower, breakfast, coffee, emails, and other crappy little reporting jobs before work starts officially at 7.30am. Its a habit now! Even on the weekends, I cant go much past 5.30am before I get up and go for my weekend rides, which are usually between 20 to 50km.
