Commute fromm Ashfield to Macquarie Uni

Postby zbaillie » Sat Mar 22, 2014 6:03 pm

Hello, I'm going to start commuting from Ashfield to Macquarie Uni and i was wondering what people reckon is the best route?
From what i can see and through a little bit of research the best route looks to be heading out to Rhodes, crossing the river, going through Meadowbank and then basically heading up NE through back streets to Macquarie uni. Is anyone doing a similar commute and can offer some pointers on the route?

I used to ride from Ashbury to MacUni - great ride! I'm just a few hundred metres from the cooks river cycleway though so I followed that to Rhodes, across the bridge to meadowbank, up the hill - get ready for some steep climbs! There's a nice cycle path once you've finished the climb and it takes you just down the road a bit from the uni. It's a great ride, was about 22ks each way for me. Make sure you have good lights if you're using the path - it's pitch black at night.

I'd say there are 2 main options, I have done both.

1. Head up to Sydney Olympic Park and then through Rhodes, Meadowbank, and across to near Optus campus
or
2. Head towards bay run, go across Iron Cove bridge, up Vic road to Gladesville bridge then through Hutners Hill down Pittwater road up to Lane Cove Rd cycle way.

probably similar distance, try both and see which you like.

3. Hunters Hill, Ryde Rd, Buffalo Rd *, Wolger, North, Heath to the start of the Shrimpton Ck path at Santa Rosa Park (* - or Piddington/Quarry)

Once you get to Rhodes and over the railway bridge you go from the bridge path through the roundabout along railway rd past the shops and go right onto Constitution. (In other words, ignore the bike path this way sign on the right a bit after the flats...) Then left on See, right at the end onto McPherson (watch carefully for cars on the left as there's a crest...) then left onto Bowden heading for Victoria.

I used to then cross Victoria and go down bowden and head for Melville but Melville is a Right Bastard. (Anzac is worse)

Then I tried going down Bowden, right on Parkes, then follow the footpath/bikepath left on Blaxland.

Mate of mine instead turns right at Victoria road and takes the road or footpath (depending on traffic) to Belmore and turns left on Belmore then goes to the Blaxland Rd path. Says you avoid that big downhill on Bowden and the climb up again on Parkes.

Either way, head along the bike/footpath on Blaxland parallel to Devlin/LaneCoveRd and roll leftwards onto Blaxland proper. He says it's a bike path pretty well all the way now, haven't been myself. Anyway, along Blaxland to the North Rd lights and turn right onto North Rd.

head down the hill till you get to Heath St and turn right on Heath. Go along Heath till the end, turn left onto the shared path along the side of Quarry, then right into the share path along the side of Santa Rosa Park. (The turn is obvious cos the shared path sorta ends.)

Go through Santa Rosa,. cross Bridge, keep going through Flinders park across the wooden bridge. You get to a fork, take the short right bit up onto Cook St and turn left onto Cook/Ford. About 20 metres on the road and there's another shared path entrance on the left going down and curving right.

Follow that, cross Kent, keep going along the main shared path. Eventually you come to the Epping Rd underpass, go under Epping Rd and keep going. Follow the path as it goes rightish and skirts the side of the big open green bit then go all the way to Waterloo Rd. (note there is a side spur near the skate bowl, don't get sucked into there)

Turn left up the shared path along the side of Waterloo Rd, up that steepish hill. The Uni is at the traffic lights at the top.
