Could this be the best "sports" commuter out there atm? I'm liking what I see. Di2, hydro discs, isospeed jigger (although I'm not sure how the new s/t doesn't gunk up..) comfiness, mounts for gaurds/racks if your that way inclined...

Looking forward to checking a 6 disc to get the idea.

As a commuter it really does tick all the boxes.
If I was planning on commuting as per my current regime beyond this year, I'd be keen, but I have a job change planned for the end of the year.
$6.5k is a lot cheaper than a car, and doesn't make you fat.

By what/whose standards is it overkill? Some bloke/blokettes will do over 12k per annum commuting. Why not use a nice bike if you can? Are we supposed to save our "nice" bikes for sunny weekends? So I need two bikes now? I don't get it.

Edit: Actually, barring consumables such as tyres, chains, clusters, cables etc what's going to wear out faster on a "nice" bike any faster if you use it to commute? Maybe wheels if you're hardcore and hang onto the bike for more than a few years?

For someone doing 12k a year commuting or 5 days a week - by all means it could make sense provided the commute wasn't 5km each way. Being that I do neither, it would be overkill for me...I generally offer my opinion by my standards.

As for the "it's not overkill if you can afford it" line...I'm not even touching that. I'm sure there is a law of diminishing returns graph that can be googled.

Yeah, I have been thinking the same thing lately. My $8k MTB that doesn't get ridden much any more, or my ~$2.5k commuter that I do 250kms+ per week. I'm thinking I got it a little bit backwards. That said, at the time I was riding MTB a lot more, and doing 100km races, so it was justified at the time, and it will last a long time too (if they keep making 26" tyres that is...)
I think the conclusion is that I need a $25k commuter to balance things out

6.5k is crazy for a commuter. Maybe think of it as a weekend bike you also commute on . Although someone at Trek probably just choked cause you called their bike a commuter.

Most importantly you have somewhere secure to keep it at work which is really the main reason for having cheap bike for commuting.

If we had the money I think we'd all go crazy on bikes. If you've got the funds, who cares? Buy and ride what you like, and can afford.

There are issues with people being precious and bikes, ie people who are precious sometimes want a cage, when the dutch experience says we get a great deal of space saving by high density racks - therefore more people can ride to places like a station if racks rather than cages are installed. Australians generally like to overspend on cars, utes, motorcycles and bicycles, and thus theft/vandalism/parking damage become issues.

As long as you accept that all weather riding eventually wears out levers, derailleurs, wheels, freehubs, chains, cassettes, chainrings, and that some parts of sporting groupsets (cranksets) seem to have finite fatigue lives, then its all fine. I replaced the whole 9s dura-ace groupset and the wheels on my teschner because of the ravages of Sydney commuting (with 11s ultegra, time has marched on enough that modern ultegra is a far more advanced groupset than 9s DA).

Domanes wheels might last longer than rim braked wheels, then they might not either, but bontrager low spoke count wheels have a long history of cracking at spoke holes for me. Probably for the same reason (190cm/90+kgs) that shimano cranksets have a finite life for me.

Go for it!I have a domane 4.5 disc for commuting. Awesome bike. Now i want the slr. If i did it all again knowing what i know now, i would get a slr/discs/32mm for commuting and a 4.5 rim brake for the weekend .

No. Has to be built up by good (as in helpful) LBS from a base SLR7. I found one, damage is mid $7's (they keep mech take offs, but warranty remains).

Then again, I looked again at the Defy Ultegra electronic/hydro disc (AT) $4.3k and wondered why the Trek is 3k better Most concerning tbh is that slidy isojigger in the seat tube that looks like a wet ride issue waiting to happen.

You'll still get a 6.9 Disc under 7k if you ask. And if there's stock. I did.

Look at the amount people drop on cars every few years.
Comparitively it's easy to justify I reckon.
It's a more enjoyable activity that is good for mind and body
