1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyI believe one of Alex's charges is making an attempt at the 1 hour record in Sydney this weekend?
Any details Alex? Is it still on? There were some details on the Cycling NSW website, but the link isn't working anymore.
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydneyi believe its still on: World Hour Record Attempt on Sunday 26 April at 3.30pm
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydneyi will do my own attempt in the morning! probably half his pace
Oppy Le Mauco - Dura Ace (wet weather bike)
Cervelo S5 VWD - dura ace Di2
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyYes, it is definitely on!!
Hoping it warms up a little!
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyYeah? How come warmer is better?
Please pardon my ignorableness
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
any other events on?
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyCan you show up to watch this sort of thing?
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
yep...i reckon there will be quite a turnout. i'm hoping to go with my old man there is even a bar that does good chicken burgers
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyCool, I think I will go along!
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
There are the NSW criterium championships being held at Olympic Park that morning before the attempt but there is no other track racing on. Officals will be coming over from SOP to DGV and we have a UCI official flying in from Adelaide for the day to oversee it (it's a requirement for official record attempts). Also the ASADA people for the drug tests will be there. And the people to run the electronic timing and starting gates. It's quite a complex (and expensive) logistical challenge. The velodrome has been specially booked for this hour record attempt. I doubt the DGV will have catering but the handle bar tavern may have food on, not sure what times the bistro operates. The plan is for a celebration beer afterwards though!
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
Warmer = Thinner air = Less wind resistance = Faster = Further.
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
Basically that's it. Air density is a sizeable factor that determines how fast we can go for a given power output. The higher the air density, the slower we go for a given power. Air density is lowered by: An increase in altitude An increase in temperature A reduction in barometric pressure An increase in humidity (although this doesn't have much of an impact compared to the above three) For example, drop the temp by 5C (from say 25 to 20C) for same barometric pressure, and that will cost Jayson nearly 300 metres. If air pressure goes up 10 hPa (say from 1010 to 1020 hPa) for same temp that will cost Jayson 150 metres.
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
Does temperature also affect available oxygen levels and therefore power production? Does this offset the increased drag to any degree?
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyWhy not time the record attempt in the warmer months? Where's the intersect b/n physical comfort and aero benefit?
Bianchi, Ridley, Montague, GT, Garmin and All things Apple
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
It is not so easy to just pick whenever you like given all the ducks that have to be lined up. For example, if you can't get the relevant officials, you can't do it. They are heavily committed to the race calendar as it is. You get to narrow it down to 2 or 3 possible dates and go with what you think provides both reasonable conditions but also enough time to prepare the athlete and work around other race commitments. I would suggest that ~24C is about right for a long effort like this. for sprint stuff, then as hot as you can stand.
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydneybest of luck !
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydneyi hear we have a new record holder!
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
Very impressive. I was exhausted just watching! NFS FPR Jubilado Bludger
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyAnywhere I can read about this?
Please pardon my ignorableness
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
Think Jayson was a bit knackered too - judging by the stumble at the stairs near the track exit. Congrats to Jayson and Alex. Fantastic consistency in his lap times, and was threatening the record from the get go. What's the official result ? Trackside supporters were saying about 2.4 km more than previous record ? That would be a stunning result, and the only thing more stunning would be the lack of publicity. WombatK - Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead

Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
could not agree with you more!!
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, Sydney
Thanks.
48.317km Mens Masters 2 category, new world record. Previous record 45.641km (Jason Sprouse, USA). That's 2.676km further. Coach is delighted. I will do an analysis and write up in due course but am kinda busy this week ahead.
Well this wasn't about publicity, it was about performance.
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyIt was a very impressive display. Extraordinary consistency in Jayson's lap times and to see him struggle down those steps to the in-field showed that he had paced himself beautifully. Hat's off to the coach too!
A bit surprised there weren’t more people there though, I was with a group of Triathletes in the stands and apart from us and NFS it was near empty, would have expected a few more cyclists to come and see the feat.
Re: 1 hour record attempt this weekend, SydneyDidn't just beat it, he's smashed the world record
I've got stuff on ebay
