The simple +1 / -1 training program for regular rides

Just got back from the US and the passenger next to me on a domestic flight to LA noticed my copy of Bicycling magazine (The US version) so we had a good chat about cycling in general.
He rides around Southern California and he mentioned that he uses the simple +1 / -1 training program whereby any rider that passes you is -1 and if you pass a rider then it's +1. Not very scientific but based on law averages it's not a bad way to track your progress at the end of a ride. He makes a note of his score at the end of the session and then uses the total at the start of the next session (as well as recording the individual score for the actual session).
Apologies if it's been on here before but it's the first time I've heard of it. I thought it was quite genious in it's simplicity and if you have a regular ride and a good cross section of riders then it's better than nothing!
(Note to Mod - I've placed it in the training section but it may be more applicable to the Commuting section?)
Cheers,
Gary
