LOOK and Polar release new power meter pedals

Interesting new pedal + strain gauge device from LOOK and Polar.

Looks similar in concept to the metrigear power measuring spindles that look promising. The LOOK / Polar unit doesnt use ANT+ though, so I am assuming its a separate development to metrigear.

Hopefully, with more developments like this, we will see highly accurate power measurement devices start to trickle down into the entry level pricing bracket. I wonder how long it will be until we see no-brand mass produced units like this pouring into the market ?

indicates pricing will be $US1900 to 2300 - not including the price of the (polar-only) head unit.

Powertap including training wheel is around $US660, not including the price of a Garmin 500 or a spare cluster - but obviously works out lots cheaper all up.

It's cheaper than the SRM wireless crankset units, but their not going to sell many to anyone on a budget.

Loved the compactness of a PM sensor built into the pedal axle but didn't like the protruding transmitter at the end of the crank. Couldn't they have made that less tangle prone?

It looks good, though I probably wouldn't buy one unless polar have significantly improved the wireless communication between sensors and head unit from my cs200. It is ok when it works but drops its speed sensing with frustrating regularity. People in our club with cs600's have had similar probs.

As usual, a great run-down by dcrainmaker. Seems like the pedals are "vaporware" - he speculates they're 6 to 12 months from hitting the market. And expensive. So don't hold your breath.

Can't see why you'd buy one if his pricing is right. Buying yourself a heap of headaches with Polar's traditional transmission problems.
