Which Joe Friel if any?

I'm not a racer but I want to be a little more focused and planned about my training.
Joe Friel has been recommended but the Cyclist's Training Bible is reputedly a bit dense. That's not necessarily bad.

As well as the Bible the other Friel books listed on the Book Depository site that might be suitable are Total Heart Rate Training, a Training Diary, Companion to the Cyclist's Training Bible et al.

What do you guys recommend?

I've bought Cyclists Training Bible and find it is awesome. Plenty of detail if you want to get deep into it or you can just skip through to some of the example training plans if that's all you care about.

Best $30 I've spent in ages for my bike racing (well, best $30 my wife has ever spent on my racing since it was a present :)

Depending on your age, he has a book for older riders with a title like "Cycling Through Your Fifties" that would be appropriate. There are some differences rhat need to be accounted for as you age... but not the way most would think ;)

Sounds intriguing. I'll look for it.

+1 for Joe Friel "Cycling Past 50"

It is a good introduction to training for riders of all ages, especially those of us 45+

I started with "The Cyclists Training Bible" found it too heavy going.

Then I purchased "Cycling Past 50" and everything made sense.

My other recommendation was my next purchase "Training and Racing with a Power Meter" 2nd edition, but you need to then purchase a power meter.

Like you, I don't race and just wanted to improve my performance and quickly learnt due to my drug regime training by heart rate is not possible for me.
