Thank you. That confirms my suspicion. As I approached that area quickly ( quick for me ), the green surface didn't seem to be the best option.

It seems I've got all the easy post-holiday gains I'm gonna get now. After improving by about 50sec in the first three weeks back, over the last couple I've only improved by about 2 seconds a week. Am still about 20 sec behind my December PB, so I guess it's time to get a bit of training discipline going. Are repeats the way to go?

Also I should give a public shout out to AmyInBrisbane for a gun effort this morning. Her first attempt at Coot Tha since we got her a new bike (replaced her 2012 Merida Juliet Ride Light 94 with a 2011 Specialized Amira Expert). She did a 13-dead climb, beating her December PB by 51 seconds and her most recent effort (two weeks ago) by an unbelievable 2 minutes 4 seconds. Smashed it!

What's up Jase? Is this post-crash struggles?

Further to Amy's effort, while the new bike is a couple of kilos lighter than the old, it also runs a 39/30 low gear compared to 34/30 on the old one, so doubly impressive gains.

had a biomechanical fit and still getting used to it - haven't been up there with the roadie since the fit. (biomechanical said it is too small, have a stupid riser stem and new saddle to throw on it which will get me most of the way there)

i might just throw my garmin in your back pocket

Joining me in the ugly high rise stem club, huh?

Hope you start to feel comfortable on the bike soon.

My ancient Bontrager MTB has a 130mm stem (albeit low rise). Hey, it was the 90s!

How could a bike shop get your fitting so out of whack to warrant such an increase?

OK, but it's embarrassing. The frame is in wonderful condition (even after I used it for commuting in all weather for years), however the build is a complete mongrel (and mostly knackered).

As far as I've been able to ascertain, it's a 1995 Race. And before you ask, I wasn't the numpty that 'modified' the fork brace. Not that it matters, those forks are horrible. Am really after a pair of Z2 Bombers with a 1" steerer. If I ever get some, I'll spend some money fixing up the rest of the build.

Love it.

Bontragers are one of my favourite hardtail MTB's.

A set of bombers on it would be awesome. I'm surprised those Manitou's actually still work. The elastomers out of my old ones melted and dribbled out onto the floor of the garage years ago.

In my mind it means your frame is to small, but I am a little old school like that.

It kinda of is too small, yes (although you'll note that despite the layback post, the saddle is forward on its rails, so I don't actually need the layback, it is just, as I say, a mongrel build using any old stuff I had lying around. I really should spend some dollars on it, it is a beautiful frame.

EDIT: Oh wait, you were replying to Luke about 130mm stems generally.

As to the Manitous, they did work reasonably well until a couple of years ago (when I say reasonably, I mean reasonably by the standards of the day, i.e. having more lateral flex than vertical travel) but they are now kaput and sit compressed and sad.

Gonna say this and hope to hell that it's not seen by the owner...but have you seen the size of the stem on the bike ridden by one of the B graders on Saturdays...not just the length but the angle
And it don't point heavenward either

Yes Geoff I was talking about road bikes.

Long stems on mtb where the norm from the mid 80's to mid 2000's. Looking back it was probably telling us again that the frames where to small but back then everything was about XC and racing. The theory was the usual stiffer, lighter more maneuverable. A bit like current road bikes :P

Oh the upside down track stem? :P I followed him in the twlight races and kept having a good laugh every time I saw it. It's excellent :P

130mm fits me nicely on a large frame but then again I'm that tall I literally can not sit forward when I catch the newer buses in Brisbane. That new one that have on the northside my shinbone is longer than the back of the seat to the seat in front. But hey at least I get a whole seat to myself :)

Off topic but back on topic I managed a 8:56 up the front last week, I was curious how this stacks up?

It's faster than me. I think I'm in the 9-10 minute bracket.
