Difference between Quarq S975 and Red?

Postby Ross » Tue Nov 20, 2012 8:45 am

The S975 appears to be couple of hundred dollars cheaper, is the difference in weight (how much difference?) or is there some functionality difference as well?

We are talking about power meters here right?

The new quarq red can do left and right pedal power reading. So I have been told.

The s975 does not, also this is an older model. The red is 2012.

I think the red looks dam nice but I managed to score a s975 only 6 months old for 1100.

Ok there is a functionality difference, thanks. Further research tells me there is only one gram difference in weight.
I'm keen to get a PM (probably Quarq) at some stage* but a bit reluctant to buy used due to warranty issues. Would hate to pay $1100+ and then a few weeks/months later it dies and costs $800+ to fix. I think I would rather pay the extra and get something that I know is (hopefully) good straight out of the box or if there was a problem then it should be covered under warranty.

*maybe tax return will help

My SRAM Red 2012 models sell for $115-120 more than the S975 models.

I also have a lightly used 2nd hand unit BB30 170mm S975 with 2-year warranty on the PM spider starting Oct 2012. A friend asked I help them sell. They've gone off the power grid.

Is there a spindle length difference between the new red and the S975? Has implications if u run a bbright frame or not... The pre 2013 red cranks are too short to fit...

Thanks Alex, I need GXP threaded and 172.5 cranks. Would consider 175 cranks as this is what my TT bike has but at this stage I'm looking to use them on my road bike.

That's true, there are some frames where the RED is now suitable for use and the earlier GXP models were not.

If anyone is wondering about frame & BB compatibility, this guide is quite helpful:

Hi Alex, I have S900 cranks on my S5 and am wondering how much to retrofit them with a Quarq? I am window shopping at the moment but would like to know if they are out of the question or not.

It's normally doable but would require a compatible Quarq SRAM cinqo spider (to replace the spider on your crankset), which as far as I know are not available for individual sale here in Australia. I can obtain the Cannondale or Specialized compatible spiders though.

You best bet is to check with Quarq directly on the technical question, as I can't say whether such a unit exists for you specific crank, let alone whether it is available for sale.

they are pretty good at answering questions.
